The cubs ain't the angels folks. Let's try to keep some perspective.

We're much closer to the Angels than we are the Royals, but we are running our franchise much more like the Royals.

The Angels didn't get Hamilton because they had won a World Series a few years ago. They got Hamilton because they put the best offer on the table and offerend him an extra year that no one else was previously. The same way Cubs put the best offer on the table for Sanchez and offered him a 5th year no one else was previously. The difference is the Cubs let Anabal use their offer as leverage, and the Angels refused to be used.

I think potential FAs problem is they tried to turn the 2011 Cubs into the 2003 Tigers.

explain.

Players don't want to go to a terrible team for market value.

i meant how we "tried to turn the 2011 Cubs into the 2003 Tigers"

2.) If you camped outside the front office and whined like you do around here, the Cubs would be floating a $300 mil payroll just to shut you up.

Agreed.

I'm willing to go to $15 million for 5 on Sanchez for that exact reason. If it will shut people up on here for a while, it will be worth it.

And I can't stop just coming to the board even if impatient bastards annoy the hell out of me, because I love this board too much.

I'm not even that excited about Sanchez, but if it gets a lot of the board to shut the hell up about the Cubs' future and their slow moving plans, it will be worth it.

For the record, I think Sanchez is a fine pitcher. But I don't really care about him at $15 million for five seasons, and I'm sure as heck not interested in Nuts' idea -- even though he's still my favorite dude who posts on this site -- about going to six years.

He, and some of you other impatient bastards, were also willing to give Pujols his 10 years and $30 million per last season. If we had done that, we probably couldn't spend on Sanchez any way.

If they had done that it would have meant they weren't playing (relatively poor). People didn't want them to just sign sign Pujols in a vaccuum; the hope was that such a move meant that the Cubs were flexing their muscles relative to the big money behind them. Clearly they chose another direction.

So, people just wanted them to be the Dodgers of this season? Sign Pujols and a few other big guns and let's go for it?

That's fine, but that just wasn't going to happen unless they were the Dodgers of this season. And, nobody has really ever been the Dodgers of this season.

Except the Yankees or the Red Sox, and now the Angels. The Cubs are a big money team. I think the Ricketts are choosing to go (relatively) cheap until the stadium and other constructions and the TV deal are ironed out even though they don't have to. I think the FO are content to wait that out. Yes, I want the Cubs to spend big and build smart from within; the two are not mutually exclusive. I gain no extra pleasure out of seeing a winning team made for less money than another. I just want a good team.

And you will get it. I will duck when I say this......but just be patient. They will spend beautifully when the time is right. It will be the blend of home grown guys and the right free agents.

Time goes fast. Especially when you get past age 30. It won't be long, as 2015 will be here before you know it.

I think the FO offered Sanchez 5/75 because it would be a move line with their plan (he's relatively young and productive), and it was more than he was being offered elsewhere.

If the FO were making moves just to "shut people up", I'd really be worried.

So what? I have absolutely no clue what you've ever said about any deal ever.

That's because I don't act like a petulant child every single time the Cubs are outbid. The Adam Dunn thread was a classic example.

No, it's because I don't care. Your ideas of what is a good deal or not means absolutely nothing.

It's just yet another in an ever growing list of near-misses. Good intentions aren't enough.

1.) It's not a near miss. Not yet anyways.

2.) If you camped outside the front office and whined like you do around here, the Cubs would be floating a $300 mil payroll just to shut you up.

That would be terrible, wouldn't it? Because big spending is bad for some reason.

I don't want the Cubs to spend just to spend and get themselves into a hole; I want them to spend because they CAN spend because they SHOULD be able to spend. How is this possibly something you don't want as well? Like I said, if the Cubs are choosing not to spend significantly more but can, that's unfortunate. If they can't spend significantly more, that's even worse. Neither is something that anyone would want.

Marcum said today he wants to go to a contender. If its in the budget(likely is) I'd love to see us sign Sanchez AND Edwin and trade Garza. I'd think that by taking those guys off the market, someone would give us a nice haul for Garza in February, once he's throwing to actual players again.

Anibal Sanchez is the "right kind of free agent" when you're a big market team that needs to get better and needs starting pitching and he's available and it won't cost you any prospects or young players.

No. No. I didn't say the front office did that to shut people up. I said I am fine with signing Sanchez for that amount even if I don't care that much about him so that people on this board will shut the hell up.

Thus, I'm willing to give him $15 million per year of their money so that people here don't keep driving me nuts.

Would it be too much to ask for Sanchez to actually sign with Detroit before we kick off the pages of hand-wringing about the Cubs not being able to close a deal with a FA target?

I wouldn't mind the Tigers signing Sanchez if it lead to them trading Porcello to us.

Because our starting pitching for 2014 is Jeff Samardzija and Travis Wood, and the FA class in 2014 is horrible.

I'd much rather have Sanchez than Porcello.

It's still pretty easy to see a path towars Soler's contract being a bargain. (Though admittedly, Concepcion looks like a huge mistake).

Given the structure of his contract, it seems almost impossible for Soler's contract to be a bargain. I mean, he's still plenty worth having if he turns out to be a great hitter, but he won't be much of a bargain.

Do you see Anibal Sanchez at 6/$90m as better than say, Edwin Jackson at 4/$48m?

At a certain point there's a better use of the resources.

I'd rather have Jackson at that price than Sanchez at 5/75. But really, I just want to make sure that the end answer isn't "nothing."

It's not our fault the Rangers offered him 4/54. People need to realize we're not the Rangers. I'd rather have Marcum at 1/13 anyway. This way we'll have flexibility in the future.

He's been worth at least $17 million the last 3 years and he's 28.

I can respect and agree with that.

I guess I'm just not in love with him more than a few other pitchers who I think would cost less and command fewer years.

Which is why the front office has offered Sanchez the best deal on the market. They've already agreed to a big concession that no other team has been so far willing to do.

Because he's 28 years old and has been worth about 4 WAR each of the past three years. He'd be a pretty good investment, if just a tad overpriced.

I'd be happy with it.

ok but what about anibal sanchez

He's 28, doesn't walk very many people, strikes out more than average and gets a decent amount of ground balls.

is 7.7/9 really better than average? i like that he won't cost anything other than money, and considering we don't owe anyone any money, it won't really hurt when his arm falls off and we're paying him 15 mil a year to rehab or pitch a 6th inning sometimes. he's just a boring dude to me.
