Are all of these almost trades just a function of the twitter world and people trying to break things before they are really finalized, or has Theo been particularly bad at closing deals?

Twitter is definitely to rumors what Mad Dog 20/20 is to teen pregnancy. Still, the kind of confirmed reports of done deals such as we've had over the past year are very different. This joins the Soler, Dempster, and Haren fiascos as premature reports that were reported as actual news. As I recall, even with the Roberts and Peavy debacles, nothing was ever reported as news of done deals so much as lots of speculation that something could get done any day.

Apparently it's okay to "try to try" now.

Many people here have been saying they expected the FO to add at least 1-2 "long term" pieces this offseason, even going to so far as to say one of Sanchez/Jackson/MCCarthy, so this isn't entirely unexpected.

It would be a sensible move, and I fully expect they'll move on to Jackson with a similar offer if this falls through.

Bully for them!

Would you continue this line if the Cubs aren't allowed to counter Detroit's latest offer?

Hey, they already used that excuse for Cespedes, so why not again?

ABTY over at PSD even said he heard the EJackson was still possible even if Sanchez DID sign with us..Adding Sanchez and EJaxx to our rotation would be stellar

Theo and Jed weren't hired because they bring a bonus to our payroll budget. They were brought in because they know how to squeeze the most out of our resources. The constant refrain of "well just keep upping the offer" is completely missing the point.

So...as long as they expect to do it, but don't actually do it, it's okay?

At some point the inability to actually close a deal is going to be a trend.

What a ridiculous post.

Until it's a prospect. We can lap the market on Concepcion or Soler, and that's just pure coolness.

It'd be interesting. It'd mean Samardzija, Garza or Wood are traded, or we didn't really promise Baker and Feldman rotation spots.

Apparently they weren't brought in to actually succeed in signing anyone good, either.

It it an excuse if it's actually true? Should they just go around preemptively blowing other offers out of the water just in case?

This was a very good offer, more than Detroit had been willing to offer. If the FO gets a chance to counter and doesn't raise, I can see cause for annoyance with them. But if all of this was a ploy to get a fifth year from the Tigers because five years was his threshold and that's where he wants to be (and boy, does this sure reek of that), I can't see how you could rationally get mad at the FO.

I can be mad at them for not putting on a team on the field that makes them appealing to free agents for reasons other than "We're the only place you can get a starting job."

The whole "agent who inexplicably doesn't try to get the most for their client" meme is a load of [expletive]. How does it make sense to anyone the Cespedes' or Sanchez' agents would just decide to not let an interested team a chance to pay more money? They'll have a chance to counter-offer.

Has there EVER been a contract for a player you like that you thought was too high? I've never seen you express that sentiment.

Would it be too much to ask for Sanchez to actually sign with Detroit before we kick off the pages of hand-wringing about the Cubs not being able to close a deal with a FA target?

Or, you make damn sure you don't get off the phone without a signed deal. You do enough to get guys to not try and get someone else to match

Yes, because turning the 2011 Cubs into the 2012 Tigers by 2013 would have been a realistic expectation. By your logic, they shouldn't be able to sign anyone ever again.

Presumably they weren't hired to not compete until 2015 either.

I'm thinking that Beliveau's DFA maybe says something about their plans for the rotation. Wood as long-man/6th starter/2nd LHP in the pen would be a good way to consolidate some roles in a bullpen that's already currently committed to Marmol/Fuji/Camp/Russell/Rondon

It's still pretty easy to see a path towars Soler's contract being a bargain. (Though admittedly, Concepcion looks like a huge mistake).

Do you see Anibal Sanchez at 6/$90m as better than say, Edwin Jackson at 4/$48m?

At a certain point there's a better use of the resources.

Yes, I'm sure it's just that easy.

If this was a negotiating ploy (and I'm not saying it was, just that it looks that way), that wasn't going to happen unless the Cubs bid something stupid.
