The original report had to originated through the Cubs. They were the only ones who thought it was done on their end. There's no incentive for the agent to leak that it's done when he's going back to the Tigers saying it's not.

Leaking that's it done definitely adds urgency for the Tigers to make a decision to up the offer, perhaps more than they would have if they didn't have that urgency.

I think leaking that the Cubs were ready to sign your player would be effective. It's certainly not necessary, but with the stakes this high I suppose an agent could do worse things than this.

So the Tigers have the agent on the phone, saying they have to match or he goes to the Cubs.

They waffle.

Then they see an unsourced media report saying they are already out. 1) It's a media report, so they don't really care. 2) They know it's not true, because the agent just told them they had a chance to match.

Now they stop waffling and do the deal?

Occam's Razor pretty much demands this came from the Cubs. Either directly or indirectly, i.e. they told another player's agent they had a deal with Sanchez and wouldn't be pursuing their client, and that agent leaked to the media.

Brett over at BN is speculating that Nightengale's source was Sanchez's agent, given the fact that Nightengale has all of a sudden stated dropping lots of quotes directly from him.

UPDATE 25 (6:48pm CT): Nightengale has a quote from Sanchez’s agent (gee, imagine that: Nightengale is suddenly getting lots of quotes from Sanchez’s agent – can’t imagine who the leak was … ) that negotiations with the Cubs and Tigers are ongoing, and Anibal has not decided.

The only person who actually reported it was done was Nightengale, as far as I know. And his wasn't the original report, again, as far as I know. First thing I read was that they were deep in negotiations from Rosenthal.

Nightengale is also the one with direct quotes from the agent...

Alternatively, the agent goes back to the Tigers with a story like "hey the Cubs have Anibal locked up unless you're willing to up your offer right now". The Tigers waffle, see the media reports, and at best believe them and more urgently pursue Sanchez, or at worst think no differently of that info than the same words coming from the agent's mouth.

Could it have come from the Cubs? Sure. Did it HAVE to have come from the Cubs? Of course not, especially since the story has slowed to Nightengale parroting whatever the agent is telling him.

Yeah, this is very telling.

I'll concede the possibility of an accidental, indirect leak but the only party with motive is the agent. Theres absolutely nothing to gain for the Cubs leaking it.

"Closing in" leaks almost certainly came from the agent. But I still don't see his motivation for changing "closing in" to "done deal," but someone reported "done deal." So either the agent leaked something he has no motivation to leak, the reporter made it up, or it came from the Cubs.

UPDATE 27 (7:12pm CT): Dan Plesac says his gut tells him Sanchez will re-sign with Detroit now that the Tigers have countered the Cubs’ offer (is Plesac an insider?). Bruce Levine says someone must have really throw Nightengale a curveball because “he doesn’t make these kind of mistakes.”

UPDATE 28 (7:14pm CT): Paul Sullivan on my agent suspicions: “Cubs not commenting on premature report of Sanchez signing. Sounds like a double cross by the agent. Too bad.”

And it was reported (iirc) that the Cubs did tell another agent that they were "down the road" with Sanchez and they'd call back if it fell through, but that isn't the same as saying it was a done deal.

And again, the Nightengale is has been the loudest voice on this and has been parroting Sanchez's agent at least casts serious doubt on where the leak came from. Nothing "demands" that it came from the Cubs.

Not to mention I'm absolutely incredulous of the idea that after all that has happened, the FO would prematurely leak something like this.

That joke works better when the front office hasn't just made their biggest offer to a pitcher since Zambrano.
