Color me a tad surprised that, prior to the Cubs, no other team supposedly offered him a 5 year deal. Considering his age, stuff, recent performance record, I find that ... puzzling in a market that doesn't have that much pitching to get excited about.

Sure feels like this is the Tigers game right now. If they want him, he's there's. If not, he's a very nice addition to Samardzija (assuming the Cubs extend Shark).

I don't know if I'd do 5/75 for Edwin Jackson. He's improved his command, but he's still prone to bouts of wildness on occasion.

He is the guy who said that he had pain in his shoulder every time he threw a pitch or something to that effect earlier this year.

Honestly, I'd be happy about Sanchez, but I'd rather have Jackson (in part because I think he'll be a much better value, not that this deal on Sanchez wouldn't be a good one).

Here's the quote:

In spring training in 2012, Sanchez told a Venezuelan newspaper (per MLB Trade Rumors), "I've never pitched without pain. There's always a small problem with something. I have five scars inside my shoulder, and some nerve has to be touching those."

There's always a why it's "good" a deal fell through.

After the Haren incident I have no problem trusting this FO to offer Sanchez 5 years. If they're OK with that, they should be OK with 6. And how many pitchers aren't pitching with some kind of discomfort or pain on a regular basis?

That seems like a slippery slope. Maybe they were OK with 4 this whole time and went 5 to close the deal.

Didn't realize that these guys had Anibal in Boston.

"Slippery slope?" They've got a [expletive]-ass team and they're trying to sign these deals with too fine a point. You can't pull the "this is my final deal; take it or leave it" approach with a player like this (and especially not the REALLY good ones) when you're a crappy team if you're not willing to spend more. The Cubs won't swing 6/90? That's bad. The Cubs CAN'T swing 6/90? [expletive], I don't know which is worse.

As Mr. Rebuild, I'd up the offer honestly. I doubt we will, because it looks like his agent played us on this. But getting Sanchez would give us a damn good rotation. It'd also signify, in my mind, that we're planning on being good in 2014. It'd take a damn good SP off the market, possibly helping us gain an advantage on dealing Garza too.(if thats the plan) No loss of picks or anything, this would/could be an excellent move. Hell, if we got Sanchez, add a solid bat, 2013 isn't out of the question. I'm sure EJax is a fallback. At this point, I'll be disappointed if we miss out on both.

yay im happy we tried yay

I'm happy that they're trying to sign a significant FA this offseason because of what it means. Can I still be upset if they don't get him? Yes. But I can still realize what this means. One of the major discussions on NSBB this offseason has been, "Why aren't we adding at least some of the future pieces via free agency?" And it is a good question. At least now we know they're willing to do so. It's significant.

But Captain Meatball(Phil Rogers) had already brought up career win/loss record and AJ Burnett. The meatball can strike quick.

Great, so we can chalk it up with the missed IFA signings on the "man, it's a good plan, but it's not actually happening" board.

Really, you're questioning whether it's a slippery slope?

It's the definition of one. What if the Tigers match 6, then? Do you want them to go 7?

Nope. 6 is my cutoff. This is a really nice plateau.

Or just offer more money if the years are too terrifying. GET IT DONE.

Anibal Sanchez agent Gene Mato on picking #Tigers or Cubs: "He has not decided. Negotiations are ongoing..'' So obviously, a late wrinkle

Before tonight we didn't know if they were even willing to sign a long-term FA this offseason. Now we know.

Obviously getting the deal done is still (more) important, but at least acknowledge it's significant that they're willing to do so.

I'm not saying, "Well, at least they tried. Still love you, Theo." I'm saying, "Sweet. They're actually trying! Hope they get it done!"

It was always just propoganda directly from the agent. At least now he's dropped the charade.
