On the Baseball Tonight podcast today, Olney said he wouldn't be surprised if Cleveland signed Bourn or Lohse because they already gave up their second round pick to sign Swisher. Hours later, this happens.

So, a pretty equivalent deal to what we gave Jackson. Man, I would not have been opposed to giving him that. Especially since you could then trade Soriano to save money and recoup the lost draft value if you needed/wanted to.

Nobody wants Soriano or he would have been traded a long time ago.

Edit: Nobody wants him for what the Cubs are trying to get for him. I think teams know he struck lightening in a bottle last year. Hell, he didn't have a home run for like two months or something. There's only so much a lighter bat will do for him.

John Henry said something to the effect that the Red Sox may not be done adding earkier today. I could see Lohse ending up there, especially since it'd just cost them a 2nd this year.

Stupid signing. Just saw a Sportcenter graph on Bourn titled "Buyer Beware?" that showed his declining batting average by month in 2012.

Sweet Jesus, we'll be lucky if he's hitting .100 by August.

But really, I'm really excited about the Indians' offseason. No huge names, and Swisher is essentially a wash with Choo (except for +Bauer), but I'll take Reynolds, Bourn, Capps, Aviles, Stubbs, and Brett Myers over some of the AA players I saw at the end of last year. And, if even one of the no risk flyers we took on Giambi, Dice-K, and Kazmir turns into big league production then that's just a bonus. We added a ton of depth and have a shot at winning a game or two against a left handed starting pitcher this year.

It makes me wonder if Francona had any impact on these signings.

This doesn't immediately make us Central competitors, but I'm much more hopeful.

Which begs the question, if you have to pick one for virtually the same contract, who would you choose to sign?

Jackson. As badly as the Cubs needed an OFer, they needed starting pitching more.

Hopefully once Garza proves he's healthy we could trade him+ another decent player(s)/prospect(s) to the Indians for Bauer, Chisenhall and maybe a low level pitching prospect with some upside. As it looks like they are in go for it mode and could use another top of the rotation arm.

You mean the first 35 games or so (without said lighter bat)?

Forget about the 32 HR in 121 games thereafter. Lightning hit those.

Soooooooooo this just happened

Michael Bourn has agreed to a deal with the Indians, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports (on Twitter).

Their first big move of the offseason

Indians are still a ? filled team though.

First big move of the offseason? I'd say Nick Swisher counts as one. So was swapping Choo essentially for Bauer.

He's referring to the mystery team.

Funny I was actually thinking about the Indians possibly being a surprise team this year before I found out about Bourn. The lineup has quite a few good hitters in it (I think 6-7 had 3+ WARs last year). The pitching is the huge question mark but there is still upside with Bauer and Masterson, and maybe even Jimenez. Wouldnt call them contenders, but they've had a nice offseason and could surprise.

From the WTF files: Didi Gregorius has a UCL issue that will keep him out at the start of the year. Kevin Towers said today they didn't give him a physical, prior to trading for him.

Samardzija turned down a 5 year extension sometime this offseason. Sounds like he wants more $$$.......

Jeff Samardzija turned down a five-year extension from the Chicago Cubs this offseason, though he still wants to be a Cub for life.

“We were talking, and we both have the same interest in mind,” Samardzija said Tuesday before the first spring workout. “We both want me to be here and both want me to be part of this team for a long time. When we feel like we’re on the same page with that, we’ll get it done. That was offseason talk. That’s what happened at the end of the year. It’s early right now. I still haven’t proven myself to where I want to be as a player. I was happy last year but I don’t want to stay there. I want to improve and get better.

Samardzija said “it doesn’t really make much sense” to talk contract after one year in the rotation. With the price of starting pitching soaring, he stands to significantly increase his value with one or two more good years under his belt. Samardzija won’t be a free agent until after the 2015 season.

“I’d rather have some more concrete stats and some concrete evidence on what’s going on,” he said. “Obviously, we’ll know better what the future is going on. But I think a big thing is I’m a healthy dude and I work hard and want to put as much on my side of the court as possible.”

Anytime you can acquire the next Jeter you throw physicals and the like out the window and just get the [expletive] deal done
