Kendry Morales goes to the M's for Jason Vargas. I love this trade for the M's. Vargas is awful outside of Safeco and Kendry had a nice second half in his first year back.

Diamondbacks land Cody Ross out of nowhere justnow...That's a pretty crowded outfield. Does this drive up the market for Soriano??

If they trade Kubel, I think it definitely helps Sori's market. Even moreso if they deal him to Seattle or some other west coast team Sori wouldn't accept a trade to. Honestly though, its going to be really tough to replace Soriano's power in the middle of the lineup, so I'm thinking he starts the season with us, since we've got at least a punchers chance right now. DeJesus is the OF I could see being dealt. Atlanta, KC, or Seattle all seem like good fits for him.

To be honest, I'd have interest in trading for Kubel, depending on the price. Not sure about his defense, but he's a solid high .700s-low/mid .800s bat, and makes 7.5MM in 2013 with a 7.5MM option/1MM buyout for 2014. Certainly the type of player that if we traded for and didn't contend we could probably flip for something similar to what we give up.

Wow..Update: Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News reports that the Diamondbacks have signed Cody Ross to a three-year, $26 million contract.

And they can't find someone to take Soriano for 5-6 mil a year?? And Cody freakin Ross gets 8 million a season?

Red Sox are close to acquiring Hanrahan. On a side note, I think Boras completely misjudged market on Soriano. He should have stayed in New York. Can't see any team giving up 1st for him, especially with other options out there.

I was very confused by this until I realized you were talking about the pitcher and not the Cubs OF. #-o

I doubt that it's so much the $5-6MM/season that's keeping us from dealing Soriano so much as the prospect/player package that we're asking for.

Final tally on the Hanrahan trade:

Red Sox acquired RHP Joel Hanrahan and INF Brock Holt from the Pirates for OF/1B Jerry Sands, RHPs Stolmy Pimentel and Mark Melancon and INF Ivan DeJesus, Jr.

The deal is now official. The Pirates weren't willing to pay Hanrahan another raise in arbitration, especially after re-signing Jason Grilli, but he should be excellent insurance for the oft-injured Andrew Bailey. The 31-year-old right-hander has saved 76 games over the past two seasons. He is currently due to become a free agent next offseason.

Would anyone be happy with that type of return on Marmol? I say no.

Yes. Why not? Marmol isn't very good and overpaid toboot.

I really don't think the package is that bad. Melancon can still be a quality pen arm, but he's never warranted being a closer. Sands can probably step in right now and give you a .770 OPS with a chance at something more. Personally I'd rather go after one top 75 type prospect and an A ball wildcard instead of the package they received, but maybe that wasn't there.

I rather like the Hanrahan trade for both sides. The Red Sox don't give up any core pieces and continue building a strong pen to lessen the burden on the rotation. Now, this does make two off-seasons where Ben Cherington has spent sizable effort at building the pen, but with Bailey's health last year and Melancon's collapse, they had to do it again (boy, bet he wishes he could take back those two trades). They also add a nice utility player in Brock Holt, someone that can replace Mike Aviles role if called upon.

The Pirates get a nice arm in Melancon. Always liked him, dating back to his Yankees days, as a potential late inning pen arm. Not sure what happened last year, but 2 years ago, he looked like a possible solid setup-closer type. I know there were reports that he had issues with Valentine. I think he can rebound, and if he does, that in of itself could balances things out quite a bit. Pimentel ... don't really buy him as a starter (reminds me a bit of Alberto Cabrera), but could see him as a late inning pen arm. Never been big on Jerry Sands, but he could compete for PT. DeJesus swapped for Holt is about an even swap - Holt's a bit better offensively, DeJesus is a bit better defensively, and neither really looks to be a starter. It's possible all four guys could flop, and even then, the money they saved on Hanrahan would make this trade relatively worthwhile on it's own.

I certainly would not want my return for a reliever to be spread across 4 players.

A few rumors going around that Dodgers and Mariners have been working on a 7 player deal involving Ethier. If something like that were to happen, I'd bet Bourn winds up a Dodger. They've wanted a leadoff hitter, Seattle has been hesitant to part with the 12th pick in the draft, but need OF help. No clue what this would do to Soriano's market, if it happened.
