I'm hoping he really liked Arizona or something, because if we didn't want to go 2/$16 or higher to beat that, I'd be annoyed.

Yeah, 2/$16 for McCarthy, 2/$16 for Melky Cabrera, and 3/$12 for Keppinger and we might have really had a shot at the playoffs.

Winter Meetings are over but I like having one thread for non-Cubs stuff.

McCarthy to the Diamondbacks, reportedly.

McCarthy was one of my top targets too. But honestly, how much of it is because he seems like a cool [expletive]? His total(minors+majors) IP since 2005: 186, 84, 105, 53, 118, 56, 170, and 120. Other than a 4.8 WAR season in 2011, hes put up a 1.8, 1.4, 1.3 and hasn't broken 1 otherwise. Like I said, I wanted him too, but I think a lot of it is misplaced, if you look at the numbers.

Rank Scott Baker, Scott Feldman and Brandon McCarthy.

to be fair, his season was cut short by a freak injury this season. He still missed time throughout the year, but the majority of his missed time was due to the line drive to the head. And whenever he's on the field he's a pretty good pitcher. Had he not gotten the line drive injury he probably would've been sizing up 3 year offers for much more money, IMO. I'd have definitely taken him all the way to at least 2/20 to grab him. I mean we're paying Baker $2 million less per season and he hasn't even pitched since 2011. Edited by The Logan

Based on my hopes: McCarthy, Baker, Feldman. Stat-wise, I'd flip Baker and McCarthy. Going forward? I "think I'd put McCarthy first, but it'd be close. If we vet Marcum, Liriano, or Jackson, it's a moot point, in my mind.

the cubs are in a position where they should have easily topped 2/15. this is disappointing, unless it means we're getting edwin jackson instead. not optimistic.

just feels like cheapness at this point. almost like theo & co were told they'd have to be crazy cheap the first couple years when they decided to come here.

Anybody should have topped 2/15. Injury issues or not, that's one amazing deal. Jesus.

It is possible that Brandon McCarthy just really wanted to pitch in Arizona, while at the same time the Cubs wanted him but had no say in it.

It's possible.

What would it take to pry Bauer away from Arizona? If not him, what about Corbin? They appear to be the odd men out of the future rotation that is shaping up to be McCarthy, Kennedy, Cahill, Miley, and Skaggs.

They've been looking for a SS. A package of players centered on Barney?

Let's not forget Daniel Hudson. He's been quite good when healthy. The bottom line is that these guys are loaded with young pitching and I want some of it.

I forgot all about Hudson. Between their excess pitching and Justin Upton, they've probably got some of the best bargaining chips any team has had in a long, long time.

Them and Texas. Having Profar, Andrus, and Olt to deal from if they want.

I really want Edwin Jackson. I like him more than I should, not sure why.

Agreed, assuming they sign similar deals I'd rather have him than Dempster. With the SP market dwindling and Greinke still out there it looks like Jackson could wind up taking only a 3 year deal.

Dempster apparently turned down a 2 year $25M deal from Boston......

Michael Young trade finalized. Texas gets Josh Lindblom and Lisalberto Bonilla. Sent 10 mill in the deal, Young gets a NTC, which Old Hoss Radbourne summed up perfectly- its like putting a Do Not Eat sign over a pile of feces.......
