I really wonder what the Nats are going to do now. I thought they were in on the Rays starters, but the Haren signing all but rules that out. I guess the easiest expectation is to simply slot Morse at first, but there's a part of me that wonders if they may use Morse to restock the system and try to sign LaRoche back for the defensive help he provided (Zimmerman sailed balls early in the year, and as talented as Desmond is, he can occasionally throw a wild one).

Either way, it's shaping up to be a very good winter for Mike Rizzo and Co., getting Harper out of CF, getting Werth out of the top of the lineup, and keeping their stacked rotation.

I think they're going to sign LaRoche and shop Morse for bullpen help.

[expletive], I'll give them Marmol and Russel for Morse. If bullpen help is what they seek, is anyone going to top that? Then we turn around and sign Schlereth and Moylan to minor league deals or incentive based big league deals.

#Indians have emerged as a prime suitor for Victorino. Terry Francona reached out to him personally earlier in offseason.

Might make it more likely for the Cubs to get Choo.

@jcrasnick #Redsox, #Cubs and #Yankees also checking in on Victorino. #Braves and #reds .. not so much. #Phillies interest is tepid.

Pass

Why pass on Victorino? Definite improvement over what we have and it's not like he's going to get some ridiculous albatross contract (nor will he be "blocking" anybody - for people who get concerned over things like that).

I'm willing to bet the Cubs have made that call

Jon Morosi @jonmorosi

Keep an eye on Mike Olt at the winter meetings. One rival club official believes #Rangers are willing to trade him.

Olt for Loux?

We've officially given up on Brett Jackson?

I have. If he shows anything, great, they can make room for him, but I don't have much hope that they'll be able to rework his swing to the point that he doesn't strike out in almost half his PA's.

Cubs spoke to Boras today (again). The consensus is Edwin Jackson is the target. (TY, 12/4)

Which user? lol

Also, ABTY7 thinks Cubs are interested in Dave Murphy

I think the point is Victorino is not the guy to go after. He doesn't fit the type of player the front office has been talking about. You'd be paying him for what he's been able to do in the past and hopeful he can remain somewhat close to that value. He's 32 and speed is his #1 tool, maybe fielding?

Orioles seem a little frustrated. Want to add, but appears they don't have money to play big on FA market.

Ha, Chone wasn't enough for them?

victorino could be a deal if for 2 years, maybe a 3rd knowing he won't be here then or would not be a main cog...don't see him helping when the team is to be back to competitive

As for Jackson, I am hoping that his struggles at the major league level will be the incentive to change his swing. Rizzo had to do something similar after a tragic debut. Jackson despite his K's has always been a good player, and contributer at each level. Sometimes it's hard to convince a guy who is having success that he needs to change or to get him to completely buy in to changing. After last year, I hope he fully understands that something needs to be done. It may take him a year to refine things but hopefully he can.

Bottom line is that no matter how much you want to, changing a swing that you have used since being a kid can be almost impossible.

I know Safeco is bringing in their walls, but playing at Citi Field killed him offensively. It is a low-pressure situation and isn't a bad idea if it's a cheap one year deal.

Right. TY is the source (short for ABTY7), 12/4 is the date...

@jaysonst: Besides #Phillies CF void, they also need RF & 3B. Ruben Amaro Jr. told me the other day he can probably only afford one, not both of above

Now if we were to send them Soriano and DeJesus and picked up a pretty big chunk of salary, they could probably afford a 3rd basaman. Not that there's really any available out there.

sorry, it wasn't super obvious to me that someone would need to abbreviate a 5 character name...

I'm willing to bet that virtually every GM has had some talks with Scott Boras, and Edwin Jackson's name came up in most of the conversations. Epstein's probably checking in on every free agent pitcher to see if he can get them at "his price."
