CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today named Scott Harris as the club’s new Director of Baseball Operations.

Harris, 25, joins the Cubs after spending the last two years with Major League Baseball as the league’s Coordinator of Major League Operations. With Major League Baseball, Harris provided transaction support and analysis to all clubs and helped manage procedural operations within the league office.

Prior to joining Major League Baseball, Harris interned for the Cincinnati Reds (2010) and Washington Nationals (2008).

A native of Redwood City, Calif., Harris is a 2009 graduate of UCLA and was attending Columbia Business School while working at Major League Baseball.

I wish I was a genius so I could work towards having a position like this at 25 years old.

I wish I could have had a position like this 20 years ago.

Maybe they just hired him so they wouldn't have to learn a new name.

The Director of Baseball Operations – formerly Scott Nelson – wears a variety of hats, including the administrative portion of managing the 40-man roster (like, making sure all of the rules are followed properly), as well as handling other administrative tasks throughout the organization. I get the sense that it tends to be a lower-level front office position (as in, lower than a GM or an Assistant GM), but one that is definitely a part of the front office, if that makes sense. It seems to be a variable position, depending on how the guys at the top want to use your skills.

The position, it seems, is often filled by a young up-and-comer, at least if Theo Epstein’s experience is any guide – before taking over the Red Sox, Epstein made his bones as the Director of Baseball Operations for San Diego under Larry Lucchino.

Damn, 25?

Our President was a GM at 28. Same with Jon Daniels... Just a little perspective.

Obama was a GM at 28? Wow, I had no idea.

Was fully aware that joke was coming.

I wish we could find a talented 25 year old to put on the field.

... and you wonder why people get tired of this kind of post.

I wanted to say it, but I didn't want to start another thing.

I'd rather have 2 guys under 25, one of which is a top 5 player at his position (Castro) and another could well be a top 10 at his position after the year (Rizzo).

No way will the cubs ever make that happen though.

I guess you read something in this post that certainly wasn't there.

Because you haven't been taking shots whenever you can at the current regime?

He's just a repeat victim of selective (mis)interpretation.

it's a good thing Hendry's people brought us Castro and the guy who was traded for Rizzo then

How many threads are you going to spiral out of control before you realize it's not everyone else that's the problem?

I guess some of you will find all kinds of hidden messages in a simple sentence. It wasn't a knock on the FO, and I'm totally aware of the fact that we have Rizzo and Castro. It was a wish to add another young talented player to the core players.
