All four division leaders in the AFC are three games up on the second-place team and in the NFC, three of the division leaders are at least two games ahead of second-place (the only one that isn't is the NFC North).

The wild card in the AFC isn't that interesting (Pitt and Cincy are tied for No. 6 with Miami a game out), but in the NFC, three teams are tied for the sixth spot with three others only a game back.

NFL scheduling is so stupid. It seems like one of the teams that has played on SNF football one week plays on MNF the next, and vice versa.

This is how you do it NFL. Can still have your Thursday Night opener. Can still have your 3 Thanksgiving games. Schedule all the Thursday games during the time when teams have bye weeks (Weeks 4-11). Still gives you 9 TNF games for NFL Network, including the opener. Hell, you can have Saturday games in December too when college football is over. Schedule teams coming off byes on TNF. That gives 16 teams their byes. 6 more can have theirs before Tgiving (Cowboys, Lions, always the week before I guess). Then you can sprinkle in the last 10 wherever. I think players/coaches would take only a week and a half bye over having to turn around and play in 3 days.

I usually don't like Bill Barnwell because he's a shitty writer, but this was a pretty good paragraph:

Now the Chiefs are about to gain some sort of momentum on the Broncos by kicking a field goal to go up 6-0? Are the Broncos going to sit there on the sideline, devastated by the whirlwind of impact that is a 22-yard Ryan Succop field goal with 50 minutes of football left to go, wondering how they'll possibly recover? Alternately, by forcing a stop on fourth-and-2, were the Broncos going to bound off the field with endless swagger, knowing that they'd finally gotten the upper hand on their division rivals and gained the momentum? Of course not. There's no such thing as momentum in the first half of a football game, because you're so far removed from placing yourself into a situation where you've got a serious advantage to winning the football game that you can't ever gather any meaningful steam.

Also, he's not kind to Matthew Stafford.

he's also not very good at observation

Because those three players take up such a disproportionate amount of Detroit's cap, it's incumbent upon them to produce at a high level every time out. Johnson showed up on Sunday, but Suh, Stafford, and their head coach weren't quite as impressive.

PFF:

Did he kick a guy in the family jewels? Only he knows what his intention was, but the three-hit and seven-hurry day of Suh (+8.1) sure did make it seem like he had a problem with the Texan QB. Those are big pressure numbers, even coming off 45 rushes of the passer, but it was the speed at which the pressure came that was telling. Schaub averaged a time to throw of 2.54 seconds, with 32 of his drop-backs seeing him attempt a pass (or get sacked) in less than 2.5 seconds, so he was hardly holding on to the ball.

No, this was a case of Suh just being too powerful for starter Ben Jones and rotational right guard Antoine Caldwell. Look at the hit he picked up on Caldwell with 2:54 to go in the first half, and the hurry he got on Schaub with 4:32 to go in overtime. This may very well have been his best performance as a Lion.

If you watched Matthew Stafford (+4.4) against Green Bay you’ll know he wasn’t very good. To put it kindly. But he showed what he’s made of by bouncing back in impressive form with one of his better displays of the year. Challenging the Texans all over the field, he overcame four dropped passes (and three batted ones) to go 13 of 26 on passes over 10 yards in the air, as he put Detroit in position to win the game on more than one occasion. This is one of those times where the stats really don’t tell you which quarterback played better.

After losing the Jags, the Titans are right on track for a top 10 pick. With Houston/@Indy/NYJ/@GB/Jax left, I don't think I see more than 2 wins ... leading to a 6-10 record.

Probably not bad enough to can Munchak, but it should get us into the top 10.

Good find. I find it's always smart to review PFF before taking Barnwell's herpity derp into consideration.

Jason Babin; recently released by the Eagles, is on his way to visit the Atlanta Falcons tonight. Following that visit he will visit the New Orleans Saints Wednesday morning followed by the Denver Broncos Wednesday evening. Assuming that Babin is not claimed on waiver these teams can renegotiate his contract.

using espn's playoff machine, the bengals are likely to get to 10 wins but miss the playoffs.

let's hope ben's ribs never recover

I don't know that anyone good actually claims Babin. If you do, gotta pay him 1.6Mil for 5 games this year, and he's due 4.3Mil next year. Maybe a bad team with a lot of cap space goes after him that needs a pass rusher (Jax?). But the playoff bound teams that could really use him (ATL, NE, Baltimore, maybe NO, MIN, TB) don't really have the available cap space this year (the 1.6Mil) to claim him. I think he gets thru waivers and has his pick of the team he wants to play for. And I can only assume that would be New England, since they are a 4-3 team which gives them the edge over Baltimore.

I think that scenario is pretty unlikely. The Colts are 50/50 at best to get to 10 wins (probably worse than that). And the Steelers or Bengals loser would have to win out to make it to 10-6, which doesn't seem all that likely either. If any of the AFC teams make it to 10-6 or better they have the inside track on the 5 seed IMO.

Nice, but we don't know if anybody good put in a claim, since Jacksonville was 2nd in waiver priority.

Raiders apparently are going to release Rolando McClain tomorrow.

you don't think the colts can win 3 games with buf, @ det, ten, @ hou, @kc and a possibly resting-their-starters hou remaining? i'd say they're 70-30 to win at least 3, with ten and @kc definite wins, and very possible wins vs buf, @ det, and a week 17 game vs. hou.
