As someone who thinks he probably did this, I'm operating under the belief that he's been dumb/crazy long before this past Christmas.

Yeah. So you have no reason.

It's funny watching people I genuinely respect absolutely lose their minds

He's a stupid religious nut who has no idea how to deal with being gay and so he did something really, really stupid. There's plenty reason.

And yeah, go ahead and keep acting like anyone's reaction to this has amounted to much more emotionally besides "this is hilarious."

I'm not ready to infer that. It's certainly possible.

What I'm saying is that a neutral observer who doesn't really care about Te'o or ND one way or the other, it's circumstantial lay much more likely he's involved. Occam's Razor.

Thing is, even if he's genuinely a victim, it doesn't change the fact that everyone who believed he's totally innocent are wrong to believe it right now. Such obvious bias is almost funny. I haven't seen one smart non-ND fan come out strong in his defense.

I don't know what your definition of 'come out strong' is but Stewart Mandel of SI.com already is on record as saying he believes the story until proven otherwise, mainly because, as he put it, Te'o would be insane to confirm this to ND and let them hire investigators if he was in on it.

what was his option at that point

From ESPN.com article on the situation:

Reagan Mauia, an Arizona Cardinals full back, said he believes Kekua existed because he met her in person when he and other Polynesian teammates and Pittsburgh Steelers star Troy Polamalu went to do charity work in American Samoa in June 2011. "This was before her and Manti," Mauia said Wednesday evening. "I don't think Manti was even in the picture, but she and I became good friends. We would talk off and on, just checking up on each other kind of thing. I am close to her family. When she was going through the loss of her father, I was -- I offered a comforting shoulder and just someone to bounce her emotions off. That was just from meeting her in Samoa." Mauia said Tuiasosopo -- whom Mauia believes is Kekua's cousin -- introduced the two. After the initial meeting, Mauia said he met her at an "after-party" for all of the athletes involved in the camp. "She was tall," he said. "Volleyball-type of physique. She was athletic, tall, beautiful. Long hair. Polynesian. She looked like a model ... " He said it is his understanding that Kekua's mother is operating her Twitter account. He said he'd never met her mother. When told by a reporter that she apparently might not have existed, Mauia said "No, she is real."

I hope some journalist goes after this.

She's effing Keyser Soze

or he's gay. it doesn't matter to me. this is still the best thing ever.

Exactly. The greatness of this [expletive] storm isn't in the "why" so much as the "who" and "where".

@dan_bernstein: Talked to a source who says #Swarbrick's lone goal was to insulate #ND and put any inconsistencies on #Teo, no matter how it came off.

Also, Swarbrick reiterated that it wasn't THAT windy, just kinda breezy and the scissor lift fell because of the devil.

I had no idea what was more likely until Swarbrick started speaking. The idea that he would put his career on the line for a guy that ND has already milked for all he's worth is even more illogical.

Yeah, it's gonna be the fake girlfriend that brings him down instead of the sexual assault/suicide scandal or the dead kid in the scissor lift. Zombie Gotti is jealous of this guy.

He talked to a girl dozens of times. So did his dad. This wasn't one guy that did it all.

She called him at the ESPN awards banquet to say she wasn't dead. Jesus

So it was a gang of people duping him? What a load of [expletive] [expletive]. MAYBE if there was seemingly some kind of effort to blackmail him or something, but instead we're supposed to just believe it was an epic prank multiple people were in on...and it was a prank they only did for their own benefit and they didn't reveal it to anyone at all?

Even the smartest, funniest, most dick-headed secret Internet community couldn't pull off this con, and I know we're not all unfamiliar with a community like that.

Even IF I were able to accept all of the unbelievable facts that would contribute to Te'o being a victim, I don't think even the best trolls could pull this off.

Like seriously, no one complicit sees all the coverage of his dead girl and has even the modicum of humanity it would take to create a fake gmail account to tell him he should probs ease up on the tasteless pimping of his dead GF en route to a doomed heisman run? No one has even a shred of a conscience in the group. Not his bud? Not the fake girl stand in? Not anyone they told?

Which facts are unbelievable? I just need a reason Te'o would risk everything for this? Put career at risk for no benefit at all? Why?

because he's an insane weirdo

Here's what Wojciechowski said tonight (video is above):

Well, I sat across from him and I was moved by his story and it was heartbreaking and heartwarming and as it turns out totally untrue. But short of asking to see a death certificate, I'm not sure what most people would do differently in that case. But in researching it before I wrote the script, I remember trying to find an obituary for his girlfriend and could not. And couldn't find any record of this car accident. But we asked Manti, could we contact Lennay's family and he said the family would prefer not to be contacted. Could we have some photos of Lennay? He said the family would prefer not to provide those. And so in that instance, and at that moment, you simply think that you have to respect those wishes. But in retrospect, you can see where some of those things simply were not adding up to make sense. Easy to say now. At the time it every enters your mind somebody was involved in that kind of hoax.

To be fair, the same sarcastic remark could be directed to the dozen-plus people posting in this thread who dislike ND at least as much as MR dislikes USC.
