Damn. Good signing, nice price tag. I really wanted the Cubs to get him.

Jays were probably only team willing to go two years. Good deal for them if his success the past couple years was actual growth and not substance-related.

that's horribly embarrassing for every other team if true. but i doubt it is.

Why the hell weren't the Cubs in on this? Like they have money to spend on other players? I know OF is probably not the Cubs biggest need, but collecting assets is. Melky at that price is an asset, just like Scott Baker.

Actually, it is one of their biggest.

Who said the Cubs weren't in on him?

We may have been. No teams were connected to Melky. But my guess is he wanted to play for a team competing immediately. He may have wanted to steer clear of major markets. No clue, but a great deal for AA, nonetheless.

I don't understand why people think Melky Cabrera is good. He's only had 2 good seasons and those were followed by testing positive.

- Those years also correlate with his prime

- I'm not convinced that PEDs make up some huge difference in his performance

- He doesn't have to be a 4-5 WAR all-star to be a nice deal for what the Jays just signed him to.

Apparently they weren't "in on him" enough if he went somwhere else for that money.

It's just odd...I don't remember anyone giving him much hype coming into the bigs...in 4 seasons with the Yankees he had one pretty good season (his first) a couple of somewhat decent ones, bounced around with a year on the Braves, where he was below replacement, then went to the Royals and was suddenly a 4 win player, then to the Giants where he was on pace to be a 6-6.5 win player. Makes sense that his best years correlate with his prime of course, but its odd to see him have a below replacement level year in 2010, then all the sudden he's a 4 win player then a 6 win player. Then in the middle of the 6 win season he's busted for PEDs. You could be right that they don't make up a huge difference, who knows. But when you have a .373 slugging percentage the first 5 seasons in the bigs, and then suddenly become a .490 SLG player and test positive for performance enhancing drugs, it is probably at least debatable.

Lastly, the previous paragraph is pointless because I agree its a nice deal and he doesn't have to be a 4 win player for it to still be a nice deal.

So the Blue Jays offense is now looking something like:

C John Buck/J.P. Arencibia

1B Edwin Encarnacion

2B Emilio Bonifacio (I assume)

3B Brett Lawrie

SS Jose Reyes

LF Melky Cabrera

CF Colby Rasmus

RF Jose Bautista

DH Adam Lind

And a rotation of:

Josh Johnson

Mark Buehrle

Ricky Romero

Brandon Morrow

J.A. Happ

Not too shabby. I would assume Arencibia is going to be traded what with d'Arnaud more or less ready to take over.

They still need more pitching...Ricky Romero is utter garbage.

And I'm pretty sure Melky was a semi-big prospect. I worked in the MWL when he was there and he was one of the top players no doubt (Votto, Kinsler and Eric Duncan being the others I remember with big hype).
