We still win next week against the Vikings and the Packers lose at New York.

Does it matter? We will lose our first playoff game anyway. At best we win one. This team has no chance of making it to the Super Bowl.

That's ridiculous.

Jesus Christ. Reading through this thread is maddening. I can't believe how some people continually allow themselves to freak out over one game (this goes for all teams/sports).

This isn't college. Assuming no surprise injuries, little to nothing happened tonight to impact our chances at a championship.

david, you aren't helping your cause with the "it's one game" thing. that's kind of delusional. the problems that exist with this team have showed up several times this season.

the offense simply isn't good, and i have a hard time imagining the line being decent enough to win 3 or 4 straight playoff wins. cutler and marshall can only do so much.

this isn't people overreacting to a loss. this is people starting to accept the reality about this team's flaws.

Anyone hear any updates on Jeffrey? I heard he went down with a knee injury.

I didn't see this. Hopefully he's ok.

Lovie said "Alshon Jeffrey hurt his knee... a little bit. Don't know exactly how bad it is"

So what is it Lovie? Don't say "a little bit" when you clearly don't know what the extent of the injury is.

Jeffrey replied "Ok" when asked how his knee was. Sounds like it's not much, but then Brandon Meriweather didn't think his injury was much and it turned into a season ending ACL injury.

My time defending Tice is over. He's gotta go.

Not really, this is a theme. Not one week. The issues (on O) that killed us this week have been issues all season and aren't going to change. We aren't winning the Super Bowl and it's about much more than just this game. You are the one who doesn't want to see that. I am usually as blindly optimistic as possible about the Bears, but it's time to accept the reality.

All it takes is a playoff berth and 3-4 wins in a row (against varying types and quality of opponents - not necessarily linear) to win a Super Bowl. Nothing about last night changes that.

The issues that killed us this week were an elite defense that had been putting up historic levels of performance underperformed massively and Jason Campbell was playing quarterback in an offense that (of the quarterbacks on this team) only Jay Cutler can make look halfway decent.

Oh, and they were facing a really really good team while doing these awful things.

Calling me delusional is [expletive] laughable. I don't think we're favorites to win anything and I never would've thought that meant much of anything. This is the NFL. All kinds of teams make and win Super Bowls, and it's rarely the best ones. You just need to be good enough to be in the mix.

Yeah, the Giants were very sketchy during the regular season last year and still won a SB. But the Bears looked real bad last night, and I'm definitely discouraged this morning.

I turned the game off when Campbell threw his first pick. I think the Bears were down 17-0 at that point. There was no reason to continue watching that abortion of a performance last night. It would have just pissed me off.

FFS, the Texans almost lost to the [expletive] Jaguars this week (remember, that team we beat 41-3?). The Falcons have barely beaten several bad teams (teams that we probably would've destroyed). The Niners got destroyed by the Vikings earlier this year.

Nobody is saying this offense is very good. It doesn't need to be for this team to contend for or win a Super Bowl.

That's fair. It was an awful performance. I'm not used to seeing stuff like that happen to our defense, even in bad years. Last time I remember seeing something like that was the Bengals game in 09.

Yep, it's all about getting into the playoffs, and who's hot in the playoffs. It was like the whole team showed up expecting to lose last night without Jay out there. Just godawful flat.

Let's not forget this offensive line gave up zero sacks to a very good Houston defensive line last week. We lost by 7, without Jay for a half, to a very good team. Our other loss was on a short week right at the start of the season on the road.

Make no mistake, last night was an ass whipping. I'm not ready to kill myself yet though.

I just wish the offense would start to improve and show some semblance of consistency as the season progresses. I just have zero faith on Tice at this point. I still think the Bears are a playoff team and they will be dangerous in January. But last night did shake my confidence.

I do too. And I've been wanting Bates to be the OC since before the season started. Hopefully, that's a change (or a shift of responsibility) that they'll consider during the season without necessarily changing the titles yet (because we all know they won't be doing that).

What was up with the defense last night? It just seemed they were out of place on every play. Did they not review any tape of the 49ers? Did having Kaepernick in instead of Smith make that much of a difference that it messed up all their scheming? They got beat at just about every position.

Also, are the 49ers capable of making any plays without dancing afterwards?

The defense was putrid but that sort of showing is to be expected from time to time from a group that plays the bend but don't break style the Bears play. If you rely on turnovers as part of your game, you aren't always going to get them. Punching balls after they've been caught isn't as effective in the long run as preventing them from being caught in the first place. Oh well, they can regroup.

The offense remains the biggest concern, and the line, obviously, remains the biggest problem. Campbell held it too long on occasion, but unlike his opponent, his coordinator did him no favors with that high school offense they ran. KISS doesn't work with NFL offenses. Unfortunately Tice has proven time and again he's a simpleton of a coach.

This game showed just how valuable Cutler is. He makes do with the same garbage talent around him that Campbell could do nothing with. It's not really Campbell's fault. 99% of NFL quarterbacks would look awful on this offense with this line and this coordinator.

After the game Lovie pretty much admitted they did not even look at film of Kaepernick passing the ball and just assumed SF would run a lot. I don't think the defense was prepared at all for what the 49ers were going to do.

I don't think the baseball "playoffs are a crapshoot" argument really works as well in football. The Bears have some serious flaws that get uncovered whenever they play a good team and those aren't going away. They've played three legitimately good teams this year and gotten absolutely destroyed by two of them. I'd venture to guess teams with bad offensive lines and non-elite QB play don't fare well in the playoff.

Pretty much all this. Except the 99% part.

You are right about that. But the fact remains the defense is good enough to keep them in most every game and the team will go as far as Cutler can take them, because nobody else can do anything with this offense.

If they do wind up as a wild card there are some fairly unimpressive teams they'd be facing on the road in week 1. And they can still win the division.

Also, while Lovie generally gets the most out of these guys, I feel a lot of the motivation comes from the embarrassment at getting their butts kicked from time to time. The ability to use weather as an excuse for the Houston game probably didn't help them come out inspired for this one. This game can serve as a launching pad for getting some people back to playing at their best. Namely Briggs and Peppers, who both sucked yesterday.
