The difference between the 2nd seed and the 7th seed in the East is basically zero. Might as well shut some guys down and get healthy. Thibs will never do that of course.

Trotting out Rip, Nate, and Boozer out there and expecting them executive Thibs' defensive scheme is pretty much impossible.

"I don't have a set date," Rose told USA TODAY Sports on Monday in his first extensive interview since the 2012-13 NBA season began. "I'm not coming back until I'm 110%. Who knows when that can be? It can be within a couple of weeks. It could be next year. It could be any day. It could be any time. It's just that I'm not coming back until I'm ready."

How close is Rose to 110%?

"Right now, probably in the high 80s," he said. "Far away. Far away."

In the meantime, Rose continues to work and contemplates the kind of player he will be when he returns.

"I know it's going to be something good. With all this hard work I've been putting into my game, I'm doing stuff I never did before. I gained 10, 11 pounds of muscle. I don't know what type of player I'm going to be. I just know that I'm going to be very good."

During a wide-ranging discussion, Rose opened up on many topics, including his injury and the impact it had, fatherhood, the bold adidas ad campaign centered on his return and the overwhelming support he has received from Bulls fans.

Check back later today at usatoday.com for more from the Rose interview.

Simmons had Bucher and Stein on his podcast yesterday. I am pretty sure it was Bucher who said that he has sources with the Bulls saying he isn't coming back this year because they want to be extra careful with him and don't want to risk any further injury(s). They want him to have the full year off and that before the season even started they didn't want him to come back/weren't allowing him to come back until next year. He seemed weirdly certain that this is the case and that all these reports of him coming back this year are wildly overblown. FWIW

Bucher has been saying that all season but no one else has (until Rose in the interview above).

I can see the Bulls rationalizing it as "We probably aren't beating the Heat this year if Rose has only been playing for a month and a half before we play them, so let's be extra careful with the future of our franchise and come back stronger next year."

I still think he plays this year and not that far away.

I'll be either concerned or pissed if Rose doesn't return this year.

Reinsdorf tried to do the same thing with Jordan.

Rose have a gambling problem too?

shut him down for the playoffs if you want to, but he needs to see some nba action this season if nothing is wrong.

Giving your fan base blue balls isn't a great marketing strategy

[expletive] that nonsense; the point is that he needs to get back out there just to get back into the swing of things quicker. Sitting him the whole year if he's actually healthy for part of it accomplishes [expletive] all.

This would at least make sense why we never hear about Rose's father.

If you bring back Rose for the regular season and it gets you, say a #3 seed in the playoffs, then you sit him, that seems like a royal tease. I'd rather sit him UNTIL the playoffs and see if you can't catch lightning in a bottle.

I feel awful laughing about this.

Having him sit until the playoffs is far and away the worst idea possible.

There arent many examples of players with the entire offseason to rehab an injury miss the entire next season. If he isnt strong enough to return in the next two months than why are they letting him impress Rip with Dunks shortly after returning to full contact practice?

I expect him to play in both the regular season and playoffs this year. If something is wrong, and they are going to hold him out, than why the misinformation campaign since his surgery last year? Until Rose says "maybe next year" (which could have been very flip in context because he says "maybe tomorrow" right after) every comment the team has made has been very positive. Why set him up to not reach expectations if he isnt progressing along with the original 8-10 month timeline.

No kidding; it blows my mind that Derwood thinks that is a good idea. Well, maybe not.
