Nobody's denying that the Bears benefited. I think everyone would agree that's the case. I just think many of us don't think that's the entire story. That the O-line was able to settle down to some extent and start playing pretty decently.

This

Not this. People scoffed at the notion that the story was gaining some traction when it is a perfectly justifiable statement to make. Obviously that is not the entire story of the game. Nobody is claiming it is the entire story of the game. They benefited from it, however. If he was in there maybe they win by 15 instead.

gooney, could you give a breakdown of the plays when Freeney was still in there? there are two other issues that could have corresponding with Cutlers bad plays early on:

1. Tice scripts all of his games for at least the first 10 plays. that can cause issues if the O isnt automatically adjusting to the D.

2. Its the first real game of the season, I would expect a few jitters.

what happened with Freeney/Webb early on that was so clearly an indicator that Freeney was missed when he went out? I didnt get to see the game, so enlighten me.

Sounds unlikely that Packers WR Greg Jennings, with his groin injury, will be able to play Thursday night vs. Bears.

so, I gleaned through the play-by-play of the bears game 1st half, and the only mention of a pass rush or noticable infraction by a Bears lineman possibly due to the Colts pass rush came in reference to Mathis's sack and Carimi's subsequent false start the very next play.

did Mathis line up against Carimi or Webb?

Other then that, w/ or w/o Freeney, the play by play doesnt seem to indicate he had any presence.

What? I don't understand what you are trying to say.

The Bears faced a weak team with a decent pass rusher and that pass rusher missed most of the game. That benefited the Bears. To suggest otherwise is just plain old stupid. You don't need a freaking play by play breakdown. The Bears crappy offensive line benefited from not having to face the guy. Why the F are you people making such a big deal out of this and taking offense at the suggestion that the blatantly obvious fact is a fact?

Not sure why this is a topic. Webb couldnt block anyone last 2 years. The fact that he bkocked Hughes and not Freeney is inconsequential other than the fact he actually blocked someone.

Any team will benefit when a good player gets replaced by one that isn't as good.

But, I also certainly wouldn't give full credit to Freeney's departure as the reason the Bears line appeared to have improved as the game went on. Completing passes downfield generally plays a hand, as does a good running attack.

If I had to guess, Tice's play book probably takes a lot more pressure off the offensive line than the Martz playbook. Tice also has the benefit of a Brandon Marshall and possibly Alshon Jeffrey to help him out with that, as well.

If the line can give Cutler enough time to hit downfield receivers, less and less discussion will take place about the talent (or lack thereof) of the offensive line.

Yeah, this is kind of a dumb argument to have about Webb.

The fact is this is his 3rd year in the league. Can he improve and develop more? Sure. As long as he puts it together and listens to his coaches. For Webb to step up and single block anybody is good for him as a player and can improve his seemingly fragile mental state.

If Webb does develop more and start to piece together good games consistently it wouldn't be overly surprising since it is in fact his 3rd year.

Urlacher fully participated in practice and is listed as probable for tomorrow's game.

Tillman and Adams are questionable and were limited in practice.

lol, now you've pretty much ended up arguing the same thing as we were. Obviously not having a great pass rusher in there benefited the Bears, no one has said differently. People were taking exception to the perception that Freeny leaving was by large the main reason the Bears averaged more than -1 yards a play the rest of the game without Freeny. If Freeny played the whole game, the Bears almost certainly still win, and they almost certainly still win comfortably. It looks dumb when bloggers trying to find an angle for the upcoming game pick out a trend based on 6 plays vs. the entire rest of the game.

Edit: Dammit i should know better than to extend goony arguments

September 12, 2012 Despite being listed as doubtful for Thursday with a groin injury, Packers WR Greg Jennings wants to play and it "sounds like 50/50 at this point," according to one source.

So should we be patient with JMarcus Webb, or should we "fire him"? Pick a lane here...

I'm not a fan of his but given that we're stuck with him I root for improvement.
