Some good stuff in Bruce's blog today.

His Minor League POTY's:

Eric Jokisch - PItcher

Justin Bour - Hitter

And just an interesting quote since I was asking about Tim Saunders the other day. From Tim Wilken:

On finding Chiefs shortstop Tim Saunders in the 32nd round, Wilken told the paper: “He’s a prospect, not just an older collegiate guy. He runs well, has a good arm and can play two or three positions. He squares the ball up pretty good. To have a guy like that in 32nd round, I’m a very pleased guy.”

I'd go with Jensen as Minor League Pitcher of the Year over Jokisch.

Loosen and Kirk would be in the mix too, but Loosen really fell off down the stretch.

It's tempting to pick Rizzo for hitter of the year even with his shortened season. But Bour does seem the obvious choice.

Rizzo or Vitters. Vitters was higher in pretty much everything than Bour. He's also 2 years younger and did it at a higher level. That and he's an actual prospect. Bour's not even the best hitter as far as non-prospects go. Rohan's .282/.349/.491 21 HR between 3 levels, bests Bour's .286/.363/.462 and 17 HR.

Hey Guys-- My brother lives down in Arizona and he went to a couple AZL Cubs games in late july. He sent me an email awhile back but I have been on a buisness trip for almost a month and it completely slipped my mind until I saw him today. Anyways, I thought Id share:

So, I got out to the AZL Cubs game the other night. I went up to a row of 3 scouts and sat down with them for last 3 innings. One wasn’t very friendly; the other two were (said they didn’t mind if I took notes). I said I was very interested in their work and blah blah blah. So I worked in the questions that you asked me. They didn’t elaborate much but, here’s what I got:

Who do you like better Almora or Soler?

Both guys are very high end prospects but he two guys both agreed they like Almora better. Tremendously polished 18 yr old.Quicker bat. Will consistently hit .300. 5 tool stud. One guy said he had Ryan Braun upside. Said Soler has great power and above avg. pitch recognition. Avg defender. Soler has heavy feet/legs and might be a little exposed to high velocity.

What about Dan Voglebach?

The One guy said “Awesome Hitter.” He could manage to play first base but is a true DH. Poor Mans Prince Fielder.

Best Pitcher?

One guy said he loved Ryan McNeil. Super strong kid. 93 consistently. Hit 95. Can absolutely pitch. Also likes, Underwood. Raw but has nice upside.

Other guy said he like McNeil too but preferred Blackburn. Athletic. 91-92 and can hit 94-95. Said Chg and Curve have great potential.

One guy that you surprisingly liked?

Tim Saunders. The guy can just hit. Probably a ML utility guy. One guy mentioned DeRosa.

Any other guys catch your eye? (Pitcher or Hitters)

One guy liked Dunston. Prototypical leadoff guy. Spray hitter. Plus Speed. Above avg defender. Plays hard. Pitcher he liked were Nathan Dorris-92-93 w Plus Curve. Good back end reliever.

The other guy mentioned Gretzky. Said he probably should’ve went to college but sees potential. Good eye. Doesn’t see him at 1B though. The pitcher he seemed to really like was Anthony Prieto. Smaller guy with effortless motion. Sat 93 but could hit 96. Flashed a plus curveball.

Thanks!

That's not the first glowing review I've heard for Dorris as a reliever who could possibly move up quickly.

Ryan Bruan upside? Not sure I see it, but wow.

Thanks for sharing. Nice info.

Agreed.

With the FO saying we needed tons of young arms, it's cool to see Johnson, Blackburn, Underwood, McNeil, Vizcaino, and Paniagua all added in one year. Just playing the odds, we'll likely end up with a high end prospect or two out of the bunch and one guy that slots into our rotation(Vizcaino hopefully).

I suppose their similarities are that they both have excellent hit tools and both have surprising power considering their slender size. But Braun's surprising power equates to 40+ homers in the majors while I was under the impression Almora's max would be 15-20. Defensively they aren't similar at all.

Yeah, not a great comp to me, but that is still awesome to hear.

Javy gets intentionally walked in his 4th PA, so he doesn't get a chance for another homer. Nice way to end the season by him.

It's kind of odd to refer to a guy as a "5 tool stud" one and then compare him to Ryan Braun, who may be one of the elite hitters in the game, but is by no means a 5 tool player. Maybe he meant his bat alone, but show me a 5 tool player with Ryan Brauns bat, and I'll show you a perennial MVP, and probably the best player of his generation.

Please kill that guy for comping Almora to Braun. That's what Harold Reynolds did on the draft show.

Must be right if Harold effin Reynolds said it.

I've always kept Kiley McDaniel's comp of Beltran in the back of my mind. But I guess I'm thinking his upside is a .300 hitting, 15ish homer type that is a plus CFer defensively.

i see his realistic ceiling being jeter at the plate, which would be pretty amazing with + defense in center.

Starling Peralta's final start has gotten off to a great start - 4 no-hit innings thus far with 6 strikeouts to 2 walks.
