I like the blurb on MLBTR that says the talk all started when the Dodgers called Lucchino. Once again, one is left to wonder how much authority the Boston GM actually possesses.

Nothing has happened over the course of the season to counter the notion that Theo wanted out at least in part to Lucchino meddling and diminishing his authority. All the rumors that Larry had a huge hand in many of the decisions made over the past 2-3 years are seeming more and more likely to be true.

Of course no decision Lucchino made was bigger than overruling Cherington on hiring Sveum and hiring Valentine instead.

I know most of these guys have seen better days but it's amazing that the Dodgers managed to get Hanley Ramirez, Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Josh Beckett during the trading season. If this was 2010, we're talking 4 perennial all stars.

Hanley (28) has looked like his old self since coming to the Dodgers, Crawford (31) was as well when healthy this year. A Gon's (30) has been pretty huge as well, and a change from the AL East to the NL West could be huge, assuming that he can stay healthy. With the possible exception of Beckett, and he's only 31-32, it's not like these are a bunch of over the hill, declining players heading off to die. These guys should dominate the NL for the next 3-5 years. Of course the same was said about the Phillies not too long ago.

Why would moving to the NL West help AGone?

I won't help him. If anything, it'll hurt him, for a number of clear reasons. Saying it will help him was ignorant at best.

I actually very much meant Beckett there. Which is true for obvious reasons.

Holy crap, how can you claim you're talking about Beckett in the bolded sentence?

By the way, here's the luxury tax deal in the new CBA: Over 189 mill, you pay 17.5% penalty on overage. 2nd year it goes to 30%, 3rd year is 40% and after that it stays at 50%. Compared to the new NBA CBA, it's a slap on the wrist. The Dodgers are going to obliterate this.

Over editing, something ended up left out. I don't need to be an expert at analyzing players to know that a move to the Dodger Stadium from Fenway isn't going to do a hitter any favors. The only possible benefit would be getting a few extra games at Coors and Chase which is canceled out by more games at both PetCo and AT&T, but none of that is as important as going from playing half the time at one of the top 5 hitters parks to one of the 5-10 most pitcher friendly.

Ha - I suppose that sooner or later one of the insults hurled at him is funny. I just find it absurd that he's universally recognized as the board punching bag and 1) he keeps coming back and 2) people keep reading.

Is it just me or does anyone else think this kind of trade after the non-waiver deadline is somewhat wrong. The Giants had no chance to block the trade, nor were they in a position to negotiate their own trade with the Red Sox. If they were to try to make any moves now to counter, the Dodgers would probably block them. I just think it really goes against the heart of what the waiver deal month is supposed to be.
Posted
The Giants would still be able to make moves though because this late into the month, just about everyone has already been passed thru anyway. Guys are either tradable right now or they aren't, if they were claimed. And while it doesn't seem like much, it does cost 20k to put a claim in, so there's not somedude sitting there with a finger on a button claiming every single guy that passes through without a horrible contract. Considering just about everyone is passed thru this month, I'd love to somehow find out the percentages of who gets claimed and who doesn't. Because,as an example, what's the use of claiming a Mike Trout, for instance? Angrls aren't trading him, not giving him away, so why waste 20k? My guess is there really aren't all that many claims.

You do realize that Adrian Gonzalez played and raked for many many years in Petco Park, correct?

Yeah, because if people say bad things about you, you should just run away and cry and never show your face again.

He can be here all he wants, as far as I'm concerned. If someone doesn't like a poster, they should, oh, I don't know.... USE THEIR IGNORE FEATURE, or shut the hell up about it because it can't be that bad if you're completely unwilling to act.

I do use the feature. It's been discussed elsewhere recently. It's funny that you'd tell me to shut the hell up in a comment defending someone's else right to post whatever they want. No big deal - not looking for an argument.

Are the Dodgers about to come into a bunch of money? I know they have new owners, but is a big TV deal coming or something?

The local media contract ends after the 2013 season. The new deal will likely eclipse the Yankees contract. Texas just got about 150 mil a year (and the Angels a bit more), the Dodgers should be worth at least twice that. So the new owners are just trying to pump up interest before negotiations.

note: The Cubs receive about 50 mil a year from WGN and CSN. Though the WGN contract ends 2014, the CSN contract doesn't until after 2019.

I wonder if the Cubs will even have any interest in working a new deal with WGN now that the Tribsters aren't involved in ownership.

Which is why when he was traded to Boston, the general consensus was that he was traded to Boston, he'd become super human. No question that A Gon has proved he can hit in that division, though who knows what would have happened had he played out his prime at Fenway. I'm more interested in how the change will effect Josh Beckett

My guess is they'll renegotiate the CSN deal, instead of anything else with WGN. With the Cubs network being the end objective, so nothing that obligates them any longer than they already are.

Why? The Tribune company still owns WGN, and a new TV deal should be beholden to the Cubs first, not the network. If they have to stay in partnership I'd prefer it be Comcast since the Ricketts own a 20% stake in Comcast Sportsnet Chicago.

can we talk about ssr not knowing who rubby is and how he's gone full meatball in the last 3 months?

Can we talk about a B prospect being called a TOR arm?

Sorry man, you should read a bit or watch the guy. You're just really wrong here. 100 MPH, damn good changeup. If he commands his slider even somewhat, he's got ace potential. And it's not even disputable honestly. He has one of the absolute best arms in baseball. The potential is definitely there to be TOR.

The most telling thing is that the two posters to jump all over you over this have been Theo and erik. Keep on keepin' on.

The original post definitely read that Rubby, who has thrown 12 IP this year, was going to slot in for Beckett immediately as a rotation stalwart. That is kinda sorta definitely not right.

And IMB! made the twitter account, I don't even know if SSR even commented on it.

Isn't that imb! Or are you referring to another twitter account?

Actually the most telling thing is you not actually contributing anything to the discussion yet disagreeing anyway. It tells me you don't disagree, you just feel like trolling.

Getting back on topic, I think this deal can work out for both sides. LA, obviously, gets a huge amount of talent, and the Red Sox essentially get to start over on the FA market this year, and they got some pretty good talent back in return. Could be the rare trade that helps both sides.

No, I said he can slot into his spot, but needs to get his velo back and innings up. Not really sure why you'd think that meant immediately whatsoever. Maybe I should have worded that a bit differently but it's not close to even being the first time I've mentioned him and figure most know he's coming off TJS and won't be doing much this year. At any rate, that's not what SSR is talking about, he's disputing the talent. And he's just wrong.
