Jed Hoyer was on with Kapman on CSN @ 5PM. Said the team needs to grind out more at-bats, take more walks, give up fewer walks and throw strikes. Pleased with team's atttitude of not giving up. Sveum is not being judged by wins, as he admits they gave him a flawed team. Castro will stay at SS, although he noted mental lapses. Future is based on getting young pitching. Not ruling out FA in coming years, but noted many are in their 30's and they perceive them as on the down hill of production. Would not put a year on when the team will be competitive.

Clarified his responsibilities and said he deals with GM and agents on deals. Theo is his boss. Theo is his boss.

Hendry would never sit down and have questions asked of him on CSN. I like the new FO group, but it will be a few years before we're competitive.

I'm a pretty big fan of Jed. Even if we didn't have Theo, I'd be very confident in the plan going forward.

I'll nit pick a little on this. I think the team at the top is good, but I wouldn't want to be without Theo. For me, he's the guy with the ties to the World Series championships.

Call me old fashioned but the fact that Theo was a part of 2 WS champs plays a big role in his validity as the captain of the Cubs ship. We're betting he can reproduce that success.

None of the current Cubs overhaul even happens without Theo, and Theo doesn't happen without his prior success in Boston.

Jed has ties to the championships as well. At least from rankings, he and McLeod turned around the Padres farm pretty quickly. Jed + McLeod would still make me very excited.

I'm not sure what you mean by saying none of this happens without Theo. Are you saying Jed wouldn't be here without Theo? I can buy that, but I meant what I said as more of a compliment to Jed than it being a realistic alternative.

I might be wrong as my memory has failed me many times, but I seem to recall Hendry going on the radio to answer questions.

Yeah, and many of those were with Kaplan on 720.

I would be much more hesitant to get on board with the type of overhaul they are doing if Theo wasn't here. It's tough enough to get on board with this tanking, but at least I have confidence in the group as a whole to eventually get things right. Without Theo I'm not sure I have that confidence.

If you told me when Hendry was fired, we'd get Hoyer to replace him, I'd have been extremely happy. I'd have been hesitant with a complete teardown though. While Theo's never done one, having him here certainly gives me more confidence in the total gameplan.

I think he's become very wary of free agency, partly because he was burned in Boston a few times and partly because fewer guys make it to FA while in their prime (as Jed said last night). So with that in mind, I think he's of the mindset that a total teardown is the only way to really set the Cubs up for the future. I trust these guys, even if the "ready to compete" phase seems like it's going to be a year or so later than most people thought.

At the same time, I don't think Jed's hesitancy to put a date on competing means anything. Kind of a dumb question, really, since if he says 2014 that puts pressure on them to win 90 games in 2014. Better to be vague.

In a couple of interviews he's mentioned how in Boston they would joke around about having a team consisting solely of home-grown players and I feel like he actually really wants to do that or something very close to it.

Here's the quote I was talking about. From an interview with Shaughnessy in mid-June.

“We joked about it all the time in the front office. We’d say, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could just say, screw free agency altogether. We’re going with a purely home-grown lineup. We’re going with old-school, Branch Rickey-style, pre-free agency, pre-draft whatever?’

“Middlebrooks at third, Lowrie or Iglesias at short, Pedroia at second, Rizzo at first, Lavarnway catching, Ellsbury in center, Reddick in right, Kalish in left. Wouldn’t that have been fun?

“We kind of clung to that in the back of our minds, knowing it was impossible, recognizing that there was an inherent tension between that approach and bigger business. I kind of kick myself for letting my guard down and giving into it, because that might be a better team in some ways and resonate more with the fans than what we ended up with.

“When you make a mistake in the draft, you just keep drafting. You keep finding another player to develop. When you make a mistake in free agency, you’re stuck with it for the duration of the deal and it can be a real impediment.

ps that team would suck.

Middlebrooks had an OPS+ of 117 before he got hurt. Jed Lowrie sits at 116, Pedroia - 101, Rizzo - 120, Reddick - 123. Granted Lavarnway hasn't played much in the big leagues this year, and Ellsbury and Kalish have been hurt most of the season. But that lineup doesn't suck.

A team constructed solely of homegrown players would indeed suck, and the process of having that team built would be awful for Cubs fans.

He made it clear they joked about it and it is impossible.

Yeah until he says he regrets not doing it and wishes he had.

I don't think that's really what he said, and we should all hope that is not at all his intentions.

I'm not trying to interpret his statements and guess his intentions. Just found that quote interesting. I believe he's said something similar to it other times as well so it kind of stuck in my head.
