Signed for $250,000 last year - another Cuban defector.

Here's BA's report from when he signed last year:

Martinez, 20, pitched on youth and junior national teams in Cuba as a teenager, then joined Serie Nacional to play for Industriales. He pitched his final season in Cuba in 2009-10, when he had a 5.48 ERA in 23 innings with more walks (23) than strikeouts (19) working out of the bullpen. At 6-foot-4, 215 pounds, Martinez has a thick frame and a low 90s fastball. Every once in a while Martinez flashes an average curveball, but most scouts said it's usually a below-average, slurvy offering. His changeup shows occasional fade but is also below-average.

I remember the ... interesting ... scouting report that Phil Rogers had on Carlos Martinez this spring.

Carlos Martinez. Arguably the greatest diamond in the rough in this crowd, the 6-foot-4, 215-pound right-hander was overmatching hitters with a mid-90s fastball and polished changeup in camp games. He will move fast if he can sustain that performance.

He still seems pretty excited about him:

Phil Rogers

I've written a little about Cuban right-hander Carlos Martinez, who I saw pitch in spring training. The Cubs have finally turned him loose in the Arizona League, and he's been excellent in four of his five outings. Martinez, who is now identified as Martinez-Pumarino, threw 3 scoreless innings yesterday, allowing 1 hit and strikeout out 4, in a game that was probably more notable as the pro debut for compensation-round pick Paul Blackburn, a high-schooler from California. Martinez-Pumarino has a 1.65 ERA and a .193 OBA after 16 1-3 innings in rookie ball. He seems like a good candidate to be moved to a full-season team like Peoria or Daytona before long.

Ha ...

Random Guess - I wouldn't be surprised if what BA terms as a changeup with occasional fade is able to make raw bats look foolish, which could explain why Rogers thought it was so good.

I knew the original report that cal shared, the low-90's fastball plus otherwise bad/blah offspeed. But I'd not seen the Rogers eye-ball report, so thanks for sharing that. I know Phil doesn't get a lot of respect, and for good reason. But if he saw mid-90's, he saw mid-90's. And if he was seeing gobs of kids and Martinez stood out above the others, I see no reason to belittle that. And 13K/2BB/2H/11P are some rather nice numbers lately.

Anyway, I'm encouraged to read that there may be noteworthy velocity in the big guy.

3 nights, 3 separate horribly blown calls by the same ump, 3 long discussions from Kopitzke...

@nbaliva so very thankful we dont get these umpires again the rest of the season. And yes i just went through the rest of the schedule.

@PeoChiefsGame Krist walks, then POCS to end 4th then got ejected by the umpire (Clay Park) not even involved in the play. Park tossed Villone last night

Arizona Phil didn't have as glowing a report, saying he had low 90s velocity but it was enough to beat up on rookie ball hitters.

Easterling a violet collision with the wall and his head/neck. Staying in the game.

So he looks like an Umpa lumpa now?
