So Kenny won the crapshoot once and Jimbo never did. Meh.

And Theo won the crapshoot twice. Meh.

The consistency with which the Red Sox made the playoffs is much more important than the fact that they won the crapshoot twice.

Very true.

Apparently the Mets inquired about Geo.

If they offered anything we might as well take it because he's getting non-tendered isn't he? Or so several have said on here.

I just read some rich stuff over at GRB...Seattle had alleged interest in Allen Craig, and many there thought King Felix could be had for him straight up. More amusingly, many thought he wouldn't be worth Craig.

Craig is interesting, but come the [expletive] on.

All fans do a bit of this with their own guys, but it's always funny to read.

BTW..Since '04, Cubs have outspent WSox by approx. $91M. That's $10M+ per year.

Honestly, @thekapman has probably been on the spot more with regards to rumors and signings than anyone.

@thekapman has no more insight than anyone else. Guess bringing donuts and polishing the GM's shoes won't work this time. I like the FO approach, no leaks, no trial balloons, no media pals.

You know, 2012 numbers are out there too(White Sox +8 for the curious).

But even then, you looked at this, and concluded that the best way to express it would be with the total number, and then to average that total number. Despite spending less than them in 5 of the last 7 seasons.

None of this was said. At all. Here was the only comment on it:

That would have to be a completely straight up trade. And even then, I'm not sure I would want to give up Craig, who is making the league minimum, for a guy who is going to be making $20M in the next two years.

That's completely reasonable from a Cardinals standpoint.

Allen Craig is 2 years older than Felix Hernandez. No, it's not.

The gist here is that the Cardinals have a $110 million budget and parting with Allen Craig + their best prospects to pay Felix Hernandez almost one-fifth of it would be highly irresponsible. Nobody seriously thinks the Mariners would do that; it's just the limits the Cardinals would go.

What's so wrong with what appears to be a power-hitting prospect like Bobby Borchering that the Diamondbacks traded him for a spare part like Chris Johnson from Houston?

More importantly, how are the Astros managing to dish off all of their spare parts for prospects? Wasn't that Theo's plan? Meanwhile, we have to beg our guys to accept a [expletive] lifeboat, and even the role players who should have long since shipped off for at least PTBNL continue to linger.

I liked the deal for Houston, but Arizona got a league average bat at 3B, controllable guy in Johnson. Borchering is a butcher in the field, almost definitely won't stick at 3B himself, needing to move to LF.

Good thing for him there are now quite a few open spots in Houston.

Now Justin Masterson and Josh Beckett could be on the market. If so, I hope that Shields and Johnson aren't dealt.

Man it would be hard to give up Craig. I would be more inclined to give up Adams and Miller and Cox for King Felix than for a packaged centered around Craig

And if we want King Felix we'd have to give them Craig. Or really gut our farm system, because Hernandez is a freaking beast.

Yeah, try Craig and gut your system.

King Felix hasn't had his obligatory major arm injury yet.

He's 26 and has been pitching ML ball since 19.

Who cares, if the Cards could get Felix for Craig, which they couldn't, you could then spin him for two Allen Craigs.

No way am I in favor of trading someone like Craig for SP.

See the above comment.

There was a lot of stupid in the first two pages of that thread, and I haven't even looked at the last two.

You said "many thought Felix could be had for Craig." Nobody said this. Fat Strat said he would want the Cardinals to give up Craig for Felix straight up, the obvious implication here being that the Cardinals cannot afford to gut their system and trade one of their most valuable chips for a pitcher making $39 million over the next two seasons. Nothing you just posted supports your point that anyone thinks the Cardinals can get Felix for a lesser package.

You know, with the way Hendry backloaded contracts at time averaging out the payroll isn't the worst way to do it.

@Ken_Rosenthal: #Rays indeed cooler on moving Shields. Tough for them to act as buyer, though. Needs are SS, C - positions of scarcity in game.

I fully expect for this to get [expletive] upon, but Darwin Barney currently has a WAR of 4.1, which I assume goes up if successfully moved to SS. To put it into perspective, Elvis Adrus, who is obviously a more attractive option has a WAR of 2.1. While your average fan would respond with something like that's why WAR is such a dumb stat, many new age GMs think otherwise, and Andrew Friedman certainly fits that mold. And a catcher they want? If Soto really is a NT candidate, may as well throw him in. If they're looking for a veteran middle reliever, 4th OF, or utility guy, we have one of each if they insist on a sweetener.

James Shields is going to be 31 in December, and having a forgettable season but he does have team options for 2013&2014 of 9 and 12 MM respectively. Nice alternative to paying 3/45-50 or 5/65-75 for one of the remaining FA options. He also happens to fill one of our biggest needs.

Name a GM who doesn't backload contracts.

A really dumb one.

I am not disagreeing with the fact Barney could be a SS option for them (he was one up until he got called up) and Friedman certainly is a smart enough GM to look into it. But presumably if they traded for Barney/Soto they would be buyers and probably wouldn't be including Shields or any other pieces off their ML roster in return for those guys.
