Blockbuster: red Sox, Dodgers working on deal that would send AGon, Crawford, Beckett and Punto to LA. Hurdles remain, but closing in

Dodgers Awarded Claim On Josh Beckett

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [August 24 at 3:48pm CST]

3:48pm: The Dodgers claimed Beckett, McAdam reports (on Twitter). This will create many possibilities for a larger trade involving Adrian Gonzalez.

The fans might not love it, but if the Red Sox just let the Dodgers have Beckett, A Gon, and their contracts, that would be a [expletive] load of money off the books. Beckett's owed 15.75/year the next 2 years, and A Gon 21 MM/year through 2016, and then 21.5 the next 2. They could do a lot with almost 37 MM off the books the next two offseasons.

Kenley Jansen is having heart issues for the second time. May miss the rest of the season. Horrible news and I hope he's OK. That being said, if paying the majority of Marmol's contract next season could net us Garrett Gould, I'd be all for it.

I don't see the Dodgers being good trade partners with us going forward. They're clearly willing to take on money, and we're not trying to shed payroll at all costs, so us paying Marmol's contract for a good prospect isn't that appealing to them.

In this case, I think it would be. Mainly because they werwn't planning on adding a closer. and assuming Jansen comes back next year, it keeps them around the same payroll and having added a nice one year set up guy in Marmol. Gould is a trade piece, they've got no room in their plans for him. He's not having a great year, seems like a good fit for all. If we're able to deal with them at all and they're not pissed still.(if any of that was true)

Just don't let Marmol listen in on the negotiations. :yahoo:
