Itto (Aguadilla PR): Jorge Soler or Puig? Which one will be ranked higher at the end of the year?

J.J. Cooper: Soler.......yawning chasm........................still here?.............Puig. Soler would be in solid contention for a Top 50 spot in our midseason prospects rankings if he was eligible. Puig would not come close to the Top 100. I don't think he'd make numerous team's Top 10 lists. Yes he got an insane amount of money (largest first contract signed by a Cuban player), but our Ben Badler couldn't find a scout for another team who would go anywhere close to that kind of coin for Puig. And beyond everything else, it's almost impossible to get a decent read on Puig. He hasn't played in an actual game in a long, long time (over a year), and he didn't run a 60 or face live pitching at his recent workout. So that's a whole lot of money on a big gamble and one that has scouts almost everywhere else completely baffled.

Based on what I've heard about Puig, this is a bizarre overreaction to the upcoming international spending cap, and a huge bet that, despite a stiff swing and less athletic body than Soler, Puig's bat is good enough to justify an investment of this size. I've also heard that Puig was badly out of shape in his recent workouts in Mexico, and that his throwing arm is not as strong since it was last seen in games. And unlike Soler or Cespedes, Puig barely has played in games outside of Cuba, so major league scouts have not had much of an opportunity to evaluate him properly.

Holy crap, this is one of the biggest fluff piece articles I've ever read with zero basis for any of it. Puig has ROY locked up in 2013, is a perennial 30/30 guy and in 2014 is just about on par with Kemp. Good god, even for BR this is awful.

lol

Unless Ned Colletti makes a trade to shore up the position by the July 31st trade deadline, the Dodgers would have little to lose by giving Puig his first taste of the majors in September.

yeah a team in the playoff race would have little to lose by giving playing time to a raw prospect who basically hasn't played baseball in over a year and is reportedly very out of shape.

Surely, this must be some kind of satire.

A tipster passed along a friend-of-a-friend type story, but one that was plausible enough (and, candidly, interesting enough) to share. All appropriate caveats apply. The story goes like this: apparently, the Cubs had the “highest” offer for Cuban outfielder Yasiel Puig, who ultimately went to the Dodgers for seven years and $42 million (there were indeed reports that the Dodgers’ offer was not the highest bid, as crazy as that sounds). But, new owner Magic Johnson put on the hard sales pitch to Puig and his handlers, and he decided to opt for Los Angeles – I’m sure you can imagine what such a conversation might sound like. The other interesting tidbit? The tipster says Puig’s incredibly accelerated residency process in Mexico was partly due to some wheels greased to the tune of multiple millions of dollars. Is it true? I have no idea. Is it illegal if it is true? I also have no idea. Does it sound a little icky? Sure. But I’m also not certain I want to know all of the details of how Jorge Soler got his residency in the Dominican Republic, er, uh, Haiti. Setting that part aside, the story is interesting for the Cubs’ allegedly high offer. Of course, we don’t know the years (it could have been 10 years and $45 million – is that really the “higher” offer?), and we don’t know any other particulars of the offer that might have made the Dodgers’ offer the “best,” if not the “highest.” We do know that the Cubs had interest, and we do know that the Cubs have been willing to spend heavily on amateurs for the past year and a half. How would you have felt if the Cubs had landed Puig for, say, seven years and $45 million?

I would have been ok with it. Again, this would be securing talent using an advantage that won't be available from now on. The Cubs will spend less money on the draft starting this year, and spend less money internationally from now on, so if you have to overpay for talent, you do it now even if the risk is higher (than Soler).

Interesting though. If true the Cubs went extremely hard at 3 Cuban prospects, and in 2 of the cases offered the most money, and ended up going 1 for 3.
