Ben Sheets Throws For Teams

By Tim Dierkes [June 13 at 9:03pm CST]

Righty Ben Sheets threw for scouts today in Monroe, Louisiana, MLBTR has learned. Scouts from the Phillies, Braves, Yankees, and Angels were in attendance.

Sheets, 33, signed a one-year, $10MM deal with the Athletics in January 2010 despite missing all of the '09 season due to a partial tear in the flexor tendon near his right elbow. He made 20 middling starts for the A's in 2010 before going down for a second flexor tendon procedure in August. At the time, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Sheets actually had three procedures done on his elbow, including Tommy John surgery.

Word is that Sheets didn't want to return to baseball unless he felt 100%, and he'd like to help a team down the stretch. Assuming he flashes his old form in throwing sessions, Sheets will be a popular free agent this summer.

Considering the fact that I can't imagine him getting more than a 1 year deal with an option or 2 at a low base salary loaded with incentives, assuming that we really don't plan on breaking out the big money just yet, I'd love to see us in the mix for him in the winter, assuming he looks good.

Doubt he'd sign with us this year anymore, he probably wants to be on a team that could make the playoffs. Plus if he is only looking for a 1 year deal there probably isn't enough time for him to get signed, get in game shape and start pitching effectively before the deadline for it to be worth it for us to sign him and try and turn him into a prospect(s). I'd like to take a run at him in the offseason and see how it works out. We probaby won't be much better next year anyways and don't have a lot of pitching ready to come up, if he works out he could be a nice trade piece.

The last time Ben Sheets had an ERA+ over 100, W was still President.

That has bad idea written all over it.

Why? He probably would sign a very cheap 1 year deal, might not even need to give him a MLB contract in the offseason. We invite shitty/burnt out pitchers to ST all the time if he works out you have a good trade piece next trade deadline and you don't have to invest a lot into him. Like I said it's not like bringing in Sheets is going to block some young guy from gettings starts (we really don't have anyone in the system that's knocking down the door to get ML starts that you would consider a big time prospect) and it's not like we are going to be on the cusp of contending for the World Series next year where we would need to depend on Sheets to turn into his old self to get us over the hump. If he looks relatively healthy, why the hell not take a flier on him??????????

Because gullible people will think he's supposed to be awesome. Waste of time, he will not be good.

I mean why the hell not take a flier on any idiot who's been out of MLB for 3 years??

Remember when we got Ryan Dempster coming off his 2nd Tommy John surgery?

The difference between Ben Sheets and "any idiot who's been out of MLB for 3 years" ought to be pretty obvious. On a cheap one year deal in the offseason, I wouldn't mind Sheets one bit.

oh man, i remember being disappointed that offseason because the cubs didn't get jason schmidt or barry zito.

The FA pitchers targeted I believe were Schmidt, Zito, Meche and Lilly. I think we did well on that one.

I'm actually a little disturbed how quickly I completely forgot Sheets existed, given that he was a pretty solid pitcher.
