Because a triple crown candidate just pulled out of the running you dolt. There are three times a year when people pay any attention at all, and that's right now. In a month nobody will remember who won any of these races.

This is a Mike Francesa sport, revered by 65 year old Mickey Mantle fanatics who lament its decline, much like boxing.

I'll Have Another has apparently been put out to pasture because of a tendon injury sustained in practice today.

Curious how much money the owners would have lost in breeding $ if the horse didn't win tomorrow.

Probably as much as ABC (or whatever station its on) will lose by not having a horse going for the triple crown.

Occasionally I go to the off-track betting place here in Fort Wayne and bet a couple races. Small bets, mainly for my own amusement. Like dropping maybe $5 to win on a 5-1 horse, things like that. Seeing if I can get lucky and win a little money. But yeah, that place is usually packed with old people who pour over the racing guide (or whatever it is called), doing actual research, then cursing the horses as they lose money repeatedly. So I guess I kind of feel like I agree with jersey based on my limited anecdotal evidence. I know horse racing is still a big money business and the Derby/Preakness/Belmont still get media attention but otherwise I don't feel like it is amazingly popular. April-June is the only time I really notice it in the sports media at all.

I think there are people my age or older who really love horse racing/Triple Crown because of how good it was back in the 70s. In my life men's tennis, heavyweight boxing, Indianapolis 500 and Triple Crown horse racing have been very huge, even bigger than the big 3 at times. There are still many of us in our late 40s and older who are nostalgic about the Triple Crown because of horses like Secretariat and how great it was to watch him 40 yrs ago.

I go to Arlington Park with a group of family and friends once, maybe twice a summer. Its a fun, cheap place to spend a Saturday and people of all ages can go and have a good time.

I don't "follow" horse racing on a national level at all, but if its on I'll watch the Triple Crown races.

I like horse racing. I'd watch it over golf or NASCAR any day of the week.

Golf really is just the worst, but the only thing Horse racing has over it is that it's short.

The only two of those that I haven't sat through the entirety of is a WNBA game and a Nascar event. They are two of the longest but still.

I don't understand the popularity of horse racing.

Right now, people only ever watch if there's the possibility of a Triple Crown. So, they'll watch the Belmont if one horse already won the other two big races.

So, horse racing is so popular that people watch one race every five years.

Reaching even that level of popularity still baffles me. Of course I have similar feelings about NASCAR, but at least the humans get named as the winners in that event.

well that's pretty much the same thing, except the car should be named the winner and not the person who drove it around in a circle a bunch of times.

i think it's more the amount of money they'd lose if the horse was seriously hurt and ended up in the glue factory. smarty jones lost the belmont and was subsequently retired and syndicated for $39 million due to his expected stud fees.

Let's rank the following sports in terms of interest and watchability:

Horse racing

NASCAR

golf

WNBA

Pro Bowling

Synchronized swimming

Chess

I'd turn off the tv long before I'd watch any of those.

i would like to add three things to this list:

cricket

lawn bowls (it's televised here in australia, and it is the most boring sport i have ever watched: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tupeq1irpU)

netball (australia/new zealand... think women's basketball but without the "excitement" of dribbling and jumping: www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOGAuwbumAU)

So would I, but since it's pretty easy to watch 2 minutes and then switch back, there's never really a decision to be made.
