Yikes. He's a big guy, so hopefully they can find a tweak or something.

All you need to know about a lot of these picks from a lot of teams:

"@BAHighSchool: "I didn't turn him in." --Multiple scouts texting me back about a guy that just went in the 5th to 10th round."

"@BaseballAmerica: The later part of the first 10 rounds has been almost entire signability. More talent likely to go in rounds 11-15 then rounds 7-10."

Are there limits on what you can pay an UDFA? Also, what are the rules for becoming a UDFA if you're a:

- high schooler

- community college

- underclassman (JR or draft-eligible SO)?

UDFA have the same pay stipulations as draft picks after the 10th round.

So much for that loophole.

The top guys in the draft are still going to get paid well. The middle tier is going to get screwed.

Sure this draft process is a pathetic joke, but at least Selig is announcing the picks in front of an LED screen flashing logos and graphics.

So you take talent the first few/several rounds, use the next X number of rounds (depending on signability of the talented guys) on mediocre guys to make sure you're not penalized and then go get talent again after round 11? What a dumb [expletive] change to the rules.

Nah, he's not anymore.

But really, what does one thing have to do with the other?

What are the post round 11 penalties?

Anything over 100K counts towards your allotment.

Any pick you go over a 100k on after the 10th round counts towards your first 10 round allotment. Unsure whether its full amount or amount minus 100k. Either way, my thought was if we had any thought of extra money leftover, we'd pop them in the 11th round.

"My main priority now is college," Almora said. "I just graduated high school and I have a full scholarship to the University of Miami, and that's all I'm looking forward to right now. "

"But we'll have to see what happens when it's time (to talk contract). I'm ready to play for the majors leagues... In my mind right now, I trust my opinions and I know what I can do on the field. That's not the priority right now. The priority right now is we have to let the process play out and let the cards fall where they have to fall."

"I can't control that. That's something that Chicago (management) has to talk to (within) their organization and come to an agreement (with Boras)."

-the full Almora statement.

Correa, McCullers, Virant.....there is no way they get all 3.

"I was smiling like a 7-year-old when my agent told me that," he said.

He said he was consistently hitting 96 on the gun, and found out when it was over that Theo Epstein had been watching.

Just talked to Chad Martin, who said he apparently opened eyes with the Cubs at a pre-draft camp at Wrigley Field last week.

Correa will sign under slot. It's the main reason they took him over Appel or Buxton.

I'm hoping McCullers is the guy they ink if they only get one of those two prep arms. Screw the Gators.

If I'm understanding it correctly, slot for round 10 is $125K, and for eleven-forty it's $100K. Anything over $100 comes out of your budget for rounds 1-10.

But, the talent should go up a little for two reasons.

1. In round 10, you're trying to draft a guy who'll be happy to sign for $40K. That way you can free up $75K to spend. But I don't think paying $40K in round eleven adds any cash to your spending pool. So from now on, you can draft guys who you really would be willing to spend $100K on.

2. Suppose we want to sign Underwood, for example, but anticipate that he's going to cost $300K overslot. So we have $300K discretionary kind of "budgeted" for him. But, what if he demands a million, and we don't have enough overslot to sign him? We'd lose his "slot" money, but we'd still have the $300K discretionary. So that could now be applied to guys in rounds 11-40. Maybe you've got a couple who will sign for $150 or whatever.

3. We can't have the budget exactly. If we're able to get all of our guys in rounds 1-10 signed, and are still $250K underneath our cap, then we can use that on guys in rounds 11-40.

This could be kind of tricky. From the club's perspective, I'd think they'd want to really hammer things out with the 10-round guys a few days prior to the deadline. Then quick use whatever might be left to snag one or two of the later picks.

Correa probably needs to take 5 mill or less for Virant to be an issue, if he wants top 20 money. Even then, McCullers is their priority, since he was taken first. Unless they're really supersmart and intend to punt the McCullers pick until next year.
