Damn, there went Pike. Alex Young is the last lefty I've got on my list. No clue how signable he even is this late.

Jake Barret just went off the board. Baker or Magnifico would be excellent 4th round guys.

I'm not a big Magnifico fan. 100 mph is 100 mph but it's a straight FB. There are other relievers I like more.

Astros taking Rio Ruiz is interesting. Maybe Correa allowed for a BIG underslot to go 1st and it allows them to sign McCullers and Ruiz too? If so, that's an awesome deal for them.

I love when USC commits get drafted by teams who can splurge.

Ruiz is a guy I'd have liked in the previous rd. Didnt realize he was still available.

I'm sorry, but based entirely on name, I want Magnifico. I hope he doesn't even have a first name and just goes by that.

Mayo and Callis said he could have gone sandwich. I like it.

Mayo and Callis think every pick in the last 2 rounds could have gone in the first round. They don't hate any pick.

In the smaller Big South Conference, Coastal Carolina has built a pretty good program that saw four players get drafted and sign in 2011. This year, it could have been Conway's turn before an elbow injury ended his season and required Tommy John surgery. Once a two-way player, Conway gave up hitting completely to focus on the mound in 2012 and it was paying off. Coastal Carolina's Friday starter, he’s a bit of an undersized right-hander, but one with a pretty good three-pitch mix. A good athlete on the mound, he throws a fastball, slider and changeup, all of which have the chance to be solid average offerings. Without truly overpowering stuff, he’ll have to continue to improve his command and keep hitters off-balance. Pre-injury, he had the chance to join teammate (and 2011 second-round pick) Anthony Meo as a fairly early Draft pick. Now a team will have to be willing to draft him and let him rehab under its watchful eye.

If there's one thing this FO hangs their hat on, it is preparation. I'm assuming they have a really good idea what it is going to take to sign the players they are drafting.

Agree. I'm pretty confident they've got an idea on signability for everybody they've taken and are taking now.

I'm thrilled that they've had the signability confidence to take HS guys in 2nd and 3rd. That suggests they aren't concerned that Almora is going to kill the budget, or that any of these three HS picks are going to require prohibitive superslots. Maybe they're ready to try get replacement picks next year instead, but I doubt scouting directors really like that.

I don't think it's smart to focus it all on one big superslot, and then be going at 40% the rest of the draft. Pitchers are hard to project. Hard to know which 17 or 18-year-old is going to get stronger and faster and get command.

And even once we get to rounds 4-10, there are still a lot of college pitchers with 90's velocity and some version of a breaking ball, or like conway have had their clock impacted by surgery.
