If we can get away with taking another HSer, I'd love it. My guess is we're done though. I'd like to see us address LHP soon.

Marlin says we're going college pitcher.

Looks like he was wrong on this one.

Worth pointing out that he didn't actually say we were going college pitcher but said he thinks the pick will be a college pitcher. Seemed it was more his opinion than passing on info.

From MLB.com's draft tracker:

Underwood is everything you'd want from a high school pitcher: athletic with arm strength, a chance to have three at least Major League-average pitches and outstanding mound presence. The Georgia product will sit in the low 90s with his fastball typically, but he can reach back for 95-96 mph occasionally. His secondary offerings aren't as good as the fastball, but both his curve and changeup have a chance. When he throws them right, his curve can have a very good 12-to-6 late break and his changeup can be very deceptive. He doesn't throw either consistently right now and he does have some issues with command at times. His poise, knowledge of the game and athleticsm say he'll continue to evolve as a pitcher, meaning he could start moving up charts this spring.

Love it.

Tony Renda was a guy I could have seen the Theo popping. Just went to the Nationals.

I would like Alec Rash with our next pick

Seen him a couple times in person, GREAT athlete with big arm strength.

Best hs prospect out of Iowa since Jeremy Hellickson

He's a reliever though most likely. No command at all supposedly. Throws hard as hell though. If I'm popping a reliever anytime soon, I think I'd go the college route with Barrett or Magnifico.

BA #72

Iowa

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"An Iowa native who moved to Alabama with his mother as a high school junior, Rash returned to Iowa for his senior season and is the state's best prospect since Jeremy Hellickson pitched at Des Moines' Hoover High in 2005. He'll go higher than Hellickson (fourth round) if a team believes it can sign him away from his commitment to Missouri and get him to control his electric stuff. Long and lean at 6-foot-5 and 195 pounds, Rash throws a 91-93 mph fastball that hits 95 and features heavy life, and he'll push his hard slider up to 83 mph. He is a quality athlete who also starred in football and basketball, but he is still learning to repeat his delivery. His arm is so fast that it gets ahead of the rest of his body, resulting in scattershot control. Scouts grade his present command as a 30 or 40 on the 20-80 scale, and his development will require patience. Rash's upside could drive him up to the second round, but his rawness and his signability mean he might fall significantly as well. "

There goes Agosta, a guy the Cubs definitely loved.

If they go college, I'd like Diekroger. Obviously would like Kelly but I don't think the Cubs can afford him.

With the Pirates taking Mathisen, they're either punting the entire draft(doubtful) or punting their draft next year. No way they can afford Appel and Mathisen within a budget.

With the way the Cardinals picked earlier, they can definitely afford to buy Kelly out of his Oregon commitment.

Man, there are still guys out there that would be tempting as hell to punt the rest of the top 10 rounds for.

If you take one of them, take them in the 3rd round so you can be compensated next year if they don't sign.

Any idea of Virant's commitment level? Would a mill sway him/ I think we could still find a way to give someone that.

Not worth it. Given that probably 1 or 2 of these guys will ever be productive in the majors, it's better to maximize your chances as opposed to putting everything into a guy you think is a better bet.

Keith Law said he expects top 20 money.
