article about the absurdity of the 2001 baseball season.

http://blogs.houstonpress.com/hairballs/2013/07/a_statistical_look_back_at_the.php

. The top nine vote getters in the National League, all hitters, averaged 49 home runs and 133 runs batted in. For decades, one guy hitting 50 home runs was a big deal. But by 2001, nine guys in one league were averaging nearly that many. By comparison, the top nine NL vote getters in 2012 averaged 29 home runs and 100 runs batted in.

...

Um, Rich Aurilia hit 37 home runs. RICH [expletive] AURILIA. This should have been ten times the red flag that Barry Bonds 73 home runs and size 12 1/2 lid were.

...

In 2012, Braun's .987 OPS was the best of any vote getter in the entire league, other than Joey Votto's 1.041. In 2001, seven of the top nine finishers had OPS' of over 1.000, led by Bonds' clownish 1.379.

Larry Walker's 2001 looked like this (rankis in National League only):

.350 AVG (batting champ)

.446 OBP (2nd best)

.662 SLG (5th best)

1.111 OPS (5th best)

38 HR

123 RBI

14 SB

82 BB

7.8 bWAR (4th best among hitters)

7.6 fWAR (5th best among hitters)

He was last in MVP vote getters at 24th.

Your point stands for sure, but that isn't the greatest example. He was getting significantly penalized for playing in Coors and it being like a little league park at that point. He would have gotten a whole lot more votes if he played in Wrigley or Busch and put up those numbers.

Curt Schilling just said on ESPN during the Red Sox-Rays broadcast that if there was one player in the game he'd give a 7 year contract to he'd pick Pedroia. Smart.....

Gruesome injury to Tim Hudson. Yuuuuck

That was brutal. Will probably go down as one of the more disturbing sports injuries in history. In case anyone hasn't seen it, Eric Young stepped on the back of his ankle while Hudson was covering first (Hudson's foot was in the middle of the back, Young couldn't really avoid it on the close play) and his ankle basically snapped exactly like you'd expect from a "gruesome injury".

How bad when compared to the Jason Kendall ankle injury?

I don't have a recollection of that injury, but a quick Google search suggest that no... it's not as gruesome. That I know of. Kendall's looked like a compound fracture, I don't believe Hudson's broke skin. It was dangly, though.

The Getz Kuntz thing is taken advantage pretty much every time Getz gets on first.

Crush is deserving of this declaration of his prowess.

It was bad, but not nearly as bad as Kendall, Ware, McGahee, or Lattimore. I would put it pretty close to when that-then Devil Rays pitcher's arm basically snapped when throwing a pitch.

Maybe I'm remembering wrong and I don't want to look it up, but I seem to recall that Jason Kendall's foot was facing 180 degrees in the wrong direction.

All I can remember is the bone.

The one I remember most was Ventura. Ugh.
