Rosenthal gave himself a huge out by saying "at least not right now". Sounds like a lot of speculation in my opinon.

This is just a negative response to your delayed gratification. People are already super mad that he'd dare take 24 hours to make the decision, regardless of what it is. I'll be annoyed when he blocks the trade, but you guys are freaking out over hypotheticals and/or failing to understand why a human would need 24 hours to decide whether he wants to move across the country to live in [expletive] Atlanta.

It's a negative response to the most recent report which indicates that he isn't very likely to allow the trade.

I know that nobody wants to be a jerk here, but...

Couldn't Theo say "Hey Dempster, we aren't trading you to the Dodgers, so you have 2 options. 1 Go to Atlanta. 2. Get booed for the rest of the season, and then we will offer you arbitration, where you have the choice of being booed constantly for a year or turning it down and being forced to take a smaller contract than you deserve. Sorry we gave you the chance to do the right thing."

Doesn't Theo have some leverage here?

Thing is, TheoJed's gone all-in on the rebuild here. I wouldn't mind having Dempster back next year, but we need whatever assets we can get for him now.

Why are people booing him suddenly?

I don't know if you have noticed, but there is a bit of anger directed his way for the past several pages. Honestly I still like the guy and would understand him not wanted to be traded right now. However, if you don't think people will boo him, then you must not be reading these boards well.

There's like 4 idiots who are overreacting based on nothing but pure speculation. I don't think we're going to see a riot if he's pitching for the Cubs tomorrow.

There's a lot that can be interpreted between the lines here that makes it difficult for me to have a strong opinion one way or another.

Dempster could have been hearing that LA was the top suitor for weeks like we were, then wakes up out of the blue to find out he's supposedly been sent to Atlanta. If he's taking time to get assurances that LA is not going to work before accepting a deal to Atlanta, I don't have a problem.

If he said he would accept a trade to Atlanta, and is now not willing to accept a trade because it's not LA(or some other goofy logic like "if you can (supposedly) trade Garza there, you can trade me there"), then while that's entirely his right, I'm not happy at him being disingenuous and wasting the front office's time.

Given all that we know, and what we know of Dempster, I have to think that this is more of the former, and making a last gasp to get the Dodgers to give equivalent value to the Braves deal.

I think the majority of fans at the park won't be inclined to boo him. Nor do they know [expletive] about Delgado.

Trying not to go full blown meatball, but if the deals goes from Delgado to Gould, I will certainly be less than pleased; this is especially true if the reports that Demp was ok with ATL and also told Brave's players he'd like to play with them were true.

Now i'm almost rooting for him to block the trade so all you [expletive] lose your [expletive]. You're embarrassing.

At least we'll have your superior moral character to guide us should that time come.

I'd rather just [expletive] on the lot of you when you act like ridiculous children

We're not allowed to be pissed when it looks increasingly likely that a very good trade for us is not going to happen because Dempster is not willing to do something he had previously indicated (reportedly, of course) that he would be willing to do?

Is it cool for him to waste the FO's time/energy too?

I think people are "freaking out" over reports that he will reject the trade to Atlanta and only wants to go to LA, and that the reason for his decision is because he feels blindsided. I don't care how long it takes, as long as it gets done, and right now it's looking like that won't happen.

The Rosenthal report doesn't sound like pure speculation at all. He didn't just pull something out of his ass and report it as sourced information.

Could it be that he's not so much blocking the trade but asking our guys to give the Dodgers a chance to match the offer, and if not, he'll accept? He's known a trade was very likely for weeks, and I can't imagine him flat out [expletive] us over by handing the Dodgers all the leverage on a silver platter.

If I were the Braves, I'd be annoyed but the fact is that Greinke and Garza both need a few starts to prove their health and even if Hamels isn't extended he'll be a hell of a lot more costly than Demp. There's really nothing else comparable on the market.

ABTY says Braves people think it's still going to happen.

We can only hope.

Who needs soap operas? Dempster has earned the right to be a dick if he wants. Try to place yourself in his shoes.

Why can't he place himself in mine? I don't give two farthings about him, and I want this trade to go through.

I just consulted with DaBum. He thinks we should all withold $50 from our cable (if your cable carries WGN/CSN), or our EI/MLB.TV subscriptions until Dempster is traded to the Braves.

Chicago Cubs right-hander Ryan Dempster does not want to be traded to the Atlanta Braves, according to major-league sources.

At least not right now.

Dempster, as a player with 10 years of major-league service, the last five with the same team, has the right to block a trade to the Braves.

What does "at least right now" even mean? Maybe he's stalling for another 24-hours to try and leverage the Braves into an extension. This certainly does not sound like rock-solid information in my opinon.

That's the definition of speculation. There hasn't been any sort of proof to back that up as of right now.

Speculation is just talking about stuff that's possible and conjuring up ideas, not reporting stuff you heard from people who know stuff. That's called a report.

Report:

Dempster, as a player with 10 years of major-league service, the last five with the same team, has the right to block a trade to the Braves.

The pitcher instead wants to be sent to the Los Angeles Dodgers, who were unable to reach agreement with the Cubs on a suitable deal, sources said.

Speculation:

"The Rangers could be even more eager to trade for Matt Garza now that Colby Lewis is out for the year"
