[baez has played all of 40 games in A ball. Kid's years away.

Aside from this, many 3B prospects end up as major league 2B.

Man Baez at second is exciting.

The Cubs are years away too. Baez was drafted as a SS, but his size and power potential project him to play 3B.

Baez probably will end up at 3B at some point, but again, we're talking years from now. If we snag Olt or Castellanos in a trade now, and then in 2015 or so Baez is raking in AAA, that'd be a great problem to have. Trade Olt or Castellanos while they're still arby eligible for a massive haul and call up Baez to take his place, or trade Baez to fill another hole on the roster. Bottom line, we'd have 2 assets that could help us win when the team is positioned to do so.

The Cubs clearly aren't winning this year and probably not next year. 2014 and on is a reasonable window based on the talent level in the organization and where that talent is on the development curve. Baez is still a huge question mark to ever be a part of a major league roster, much less that he'll be ready to contribute at a high level at the precise time we'll need him. Again, if we're lucky, we'll have the same "problem" with Vogelbach vis-a-vis Rizzo in 3 years.

Are Olt or Castellanos (+a pitching prospect) realistic options? That seems like an awfully big haul for 7 starts of Ryan Dempster. I'm hoping for the best, but prepared for the "THAT'S all we got?" comments as well.

This is true, but I'm holding out hope that next year is a "this is a .500 team this year, but they consistently show glimpses of being amazing in the near future"-year.

Who do people like better between Castellanos and Olt? I'd say we could get the lesser one for Dempster, and target the higher quality guy plus a top-50 pitching prospect for Garza.

EDIT: That said, I'd guess we go straight upside pitching prospects for Demp.

Let it not be said that Theo and co haven't been stellar at managing our expectations.

If I found myself HOPING for that scenario, I'd probably just quit the Cubs. .500 with several exciting prospects being added/coming up and contributing is the minimum I expect for next year.

Castellanos was just promoted to AA and has only played 31 games at that level, posting a .302/.311/.465 line with a K:BB ratio of 31:3. Granted he's still just 20, but he's not a sure thing at all. Given the failure rate of prospects and the viable window for the the Tigers' ML club, Castellanos really shouldn't be off limits in a trade for a quality SP like Garza or even Dempster.

Olt on the other hand is much older (24) has absolutely raked in AA this year. He's probably ML-ready right now.

I know it was posted in this thread, but the quote mentioning the 3B prospect didn't really mention being specifically about a Dempster trade. I just assumed that something involving Olt/Castellanos was probably a Garza deal.

Yeah, Olt or Castellanos would be in a Garza deal, if we're even that lucky. A guy like Edward Salcedo is a Braves 3B prospect that could be in play for Dempster. Maybe, Boston could put Garin Cecchini out there, but I seriously doubt it, in a Dempster deal.

Castellanos is playing RF currently in AA, my guess is the Tigers bring him up within a month. I like Olt a lot, but he's actually a year, to the day, older than Vitters.

He also has more power and patience, and is better on defense. He fits our front office's philosophy much better then Vitters.

RT @Buster_ESPN: Cubs are going to push the Dempster talks in next week, partly to clear decks for Garza talks later.

Makes sense... having both Theo and Jed is gonna help but we're still going to need to make at least one move in the next week to ten days so we can get everything done we need to get done by the deadline.

While the more rational Cubs fans eagerly await the commencing of the sale, I'm very curious to see how the, for lack of a better term meat headed fans react to a fire sale when the team is finally starting to play well for an extended stretch.

What? Dempster and Garza have been talked about as being as good gone for a while now. The meatballs are well versed.

Billingsley has elbow pain and will have an MRI. Manager Don Mattingly is unhappy that Billingsley did not disclose the injury earlier.
