New poll for a new month. As with the first poll, what you think is a "good" job is up to you. As long as you apply your own definition consistently, that's what matters.

Past results:

April - 61% Yes - 28 votes

He seems mindful of the pitching staff, he mostly seems to be using matchup advantages correctly. He isn't prematurely benching guys with bad starts due to poor variance, and the baserunning is fun to watch.

Yes.

I'm not sure if he's doing a good job but he's certainly not doing a bad job. Just meh right now. I'm not really sure if he's doing much managing at all. I think he's playing it safe. I'm sure he'll get better as the season goes on.

What you've just described is my idea of a manager doing a good job.

Yeah that's why I voted I approve. I don't think he's been great so far but I can't say he's done a bad job at all. He definitely seems to be better than Quade although that's not saying much.

He was a bit unnecessarily risky with pitch counts early in the season and I think some of the overly aggressive baserunning is foolish, but by and large he hasn't been a nuisance manager and seems to be doing what he can with the crap roster he has.

I actually like the overly aggressive base running because of the crap roster he has.

If this encompasses our whole coaching staff, my "yes" gets even stronger. Maybe it's totally anecdotal and not quantifiable but a lot of the teaching they've done seems to be paying off. Soriano looks less clueless in the OF (and I realize he has historically graded out as an OK to good fielder, but that was mostly because of his arm). I like the approach with the baserunning, despite being a bit overly aggressive at times. Could be small sample, and could have nothing to do with the coaching, but Starlin is an improved basestealer and, according to the numbers sneakypower posted, the coaching defensively seems to be paying off as well.

I want to give Bosio some credit with Shark, but it really seems he kind of took everything upon himself before spring training even started. I guess there IS something to be said though about putting him in the rotation though, knowing your pen was going to be considerably weaker. Probably shouldn't be a big deal, nut plenty of other coaching staffs would have messed that up.

Also, from yesterday's game thread

The Cubs are 4th in MLB in defensive efficiency. They were 26th last year.

How about baserunning from last year to this one?

3rd in BsR this year, 29th last year.

I hope some people are getting past the feeling that he was hired as a "cheap stopgap." I don't think this front office operates that way.

There aren't many managers who actually make a positive impact on your chances of winning, but, and I know it's early, I think we may have one of them.

Have people been thinking that way? If so, I've been oblivious to it, I guess. I agree our FO made this hire as a longterm fit. I was completely in the Maddux camp but I thought Sveum would be a good hire as well. I think Maddux will eventually take a job, but I doubt he does anything Sveum isn't already doing.

There are people who have posted that, yes. Drove me nuts at the time.

Sveum, I like you, but if you make Castro sacrifice bunt again, there are going to be some problems.

the bunt with Mather was just as bad. They were playing 10 ft in on the grass and charging hard. Just dumb baseball.
