Yikes. Gerardo Concepcion gave up 7 and only got 2 outs in the 1st.

His numbers weren't great at Extended Spring Training either. I didn't expect growing pains at low-A given his scouting report.

Hopefully this is an adjustment period for him.

Just saw Vitters' season line (.262/.310/.308)...the 7% BB is a step in the right direction, but the lack of power sucks. He's not even slugging .400 right now. OTOH at some point every year Vitters starts tearing it up until a pitch hits him or something, and he's a notoriously slow starter.

@BenBadler: Gerardo Concepcion dunzo after 7 R in 0.2 IP this morning. Why the Cubs paid him $6 million is a very interesting question.

@BenBadler: I thought so. Vanilla stuff, but throws Ks RT @RaisinMan101 Yikes! Your scouting reports indicated he probably could handle low-A, at least.

I'm hoping he's off due to the cultural adjustment and the late start to his spring.

It's been like over a year since he pitched regularly, right?

Oh man, good point.

I'll be at the Iowa game tonight. Looking forward to seeing the big three, as well as Sappelt and Cardenas. Interested to see Jay Jackson too but i'm not sure why anymore. I'll keep an eye on the stadium gun and let you guys know tomorrow.

Vitters? ugh

No one wants to get a good morning doom boner going more than I do, but there's really nothing to Concepcion's results right now. He's getting used to pitching again, he's getting used to pitching in America, he's warming up his arm for the year, and it's a small sample.

Somewhere there's an alternate world where Vitters was a second-round pick and played at age-appropriate levels every step of the way. In that world, Cubs fans drool over what a great find he is.

Did we take Wieters in the first round in that alternate universe?

Yep and everyone's pissed it took him 4/5 years to have a 4 WAR season in the MLB considering his hype.

To be fair to Cubs management, it's not like Vitters was rushed either. Now, I have criticized the fact that they seemed to call him up off a hot streak, and would rather have seen him have sustained success at a level before getting a bump, but he has gone through each level of the system, spending some extra time at AA. If he played at "age-appropriate levels", he would've had to been held back twice (if we use age 21 as the marker for Low A). It might or might not have been in his best long term interest, but I tend to think that there would've been a lot of Cubs fans that also questioned why he was taking so long to work up the ladder.

My point? Age-appropriate levels for Josh Vitters is different from many other HS kids since he was younger than most coming out. For him to be age-appropriate, he would've really had to struggle badly.

Really nice run Szczur is on, .333/.435/.538 over the last 10, showing power, speed, and discipline. Very impressed that it seems like he's found a balance between discipline and instinct.

Let's see if Silva's 3 hit game can get him going offensively again. He had slumped a bit.

Good to see Del Valle have a solid start, but seeing him starting still makes me wonder why Antigua isn't, as Antigua seemed like a better arm. Oh well.

If we're going to keep guys like Schlitter and Morris around, I hope they get pushed up, like Schlitter did, asap. Morris just got off the DL, so I'm not suggesting anytime soon, but considering their ages, let's move them up and move some arms around.

I don't know if I ever bought what the Cubs were selling on Concepcion, but I agree with others who say this is way too early to be disappointed. When you factor in that the MWL probably isn't all that warm this time of year, to say the least (actually haven't checked weather reports, since I'm on the East), let's give him some time. Although it's two awfully bad starts to the year.

Willengton Cruz has made two solid outings since the shift to a pen/piggyback role (I actually don't recall if it was defined what role he would be in). SSS, of course, but it does make one wonder if he's simply better off using the plus breaking ball in a pen role.

It was in the mid 50s for Concepcion's debut, 64 today. Probably the coolest weather he's ever pitched in outside of Arizona earlier this month.

Too bad. I was hoping that the Rays passed on Price for financial reasons.

For a second there, I thought you were talking about his velocity, and I was really worried.
