the twitterverse seems to think stevens and shaka stay put, shaka is busy now inking yet another new and huge contract with vcu. looks like Gottfried is the frontrunner at UCLA.

Twitterverse also thought Howland wasn't out until news broke on Saturday, so yeah.

yeah, but they ain't the ones saying Gottfried is the frontrunner.

looks like NW is going to hire Chris Collins. Great hire for them.

Not disagreeing but how is Collins different than all the other Duke assistants that have bottomed out?

Adam Zagoria is pretty damn clueless on this one.

it doesn't make you a little nervous? i mean anything less than stevens or smart would be a disaster, though i think marshall would save them face.

because this is northwestern.

let me expound on this a bit. northwestern is a school in need of a basketball facelift, and collins certainly fits the bill. he has national name recognition, has been the right hand man of a legendary coach, is from the area, and knows the recruiting grounds.

the second-tier illinois athletes will want to play for him, and he may be able to get a pretty solid foundation to build from.

There's always risk when trying to hire a new coach. I'm nervous about a couple of things - the incompetence of our AD and what I feel is a wild goose chase by the top boosters who are going after pie in the sky candidates who probably aren't even better than Stevens, wasting time and effort that should be directed at Stevens.

I'm not nervous that a couple of boosters who were friends with Gottfried are talking to Zagoria.

What exactly happened to UCLA after those Final Four runs? It doesn't look like their recruiting fell off; they just sucked. Did Howland forget how to coach?

Howland whiffed on a lot of national elite talent and did not have a solid recruiting backup plan. Recruiting absolutely fell off. Between ignoring local prospects until he whiffed nationally and his rough reputation, he practically ignored the 3/4 star Californians who were a big part of his early success. Look how poor the classes between Holiday (2008) and Shabazz this year were. He had an unnaturally high transfer rate (probably because the players didn't like playing for him), causing major roster management issues - worse depth and scrambling to pick up worse transfers and recruits.

Howland tried to shift away from a defense-first approach because he felt offense was his downfall in the three Final Fours. But he wasn't a good offense coach. He was never a good motivator, which was fine when you had players like Afflalo, Westbrook, Love, etc leading the team who were very self motivated. Not fine when you had guys like Reeves Nelson and Josh Smith.

So what job is Shaka Smart waiting for if he passes on UCLA?

I thought the popular theory was Duke/UNC after Coach K/Williams retire.

I also thought I've heard he wants the Wisconsin job once Bo leaves, as he's from Madison.

Florida if Donovan leaves for the NBA?

maybe he's not waiting for any job

Yup - he could be The Mark Few of the East.

I wouldn't want the Duke or UNC jobs as a young coach who wasn't an assistant on K or Williams' staffs (ask Matt Doherty about that). UCLA is also a potential career killer. IMO, there are "safer" but still lucrative/prestigious jobs that could be out there, such as Wisconsin (which someone already mentioned). There are also plenty of cash-rich ACC and SEC schools that have decent hoops traditions and are in need of a facelift.

Iowa won at Virginia by 11 to move on to MSG next week. It's the NIT so with all the standard disclaimers included, this is a really good development for a super young team. Woodbury had a really good game tonight and Marble has just been killing it. They'll play Maryland on Tuesday with the other semifinal being Baylor vs. BYU.

Nice to get the "can't beat a decent team" monkey of their backs too.

Did you mean away from Carver Hawkeye? You already beat 4 good teams this season. And Virginia...kind of sucks.

Wouldn't shock me if Smart is waiting out the UVA gig.
