amazing that one good week turns illinois bball fans into notre dame football fans.

Yep, I clearly think we have the best history ever, you got me.

In reality I'd say in history we are the best program to not win a title. A whole lot of wins and a great winning percentage. Just haven't got the big one.

Take out glen Robinson and look at the Keady years. Then see if you see what I meant.

1989 15-16

1990 22-8

1991 17-12

1992 18-15

1993 18-10

1997 18-12

1998 28-8

1999 21-13

2000 24-10

2001 17-15

2002 13-18

2003 19-11

2004 17-14

2005 7-21

Those are all bubble or worse years. The Glen Robinson years were obviously awesome though.

Swallowing hard because coming to Smack's defense is about the last thing I want to do; but Gene Keady is a great dude so here goes. First, looking at records is one way to do this, sure, but I think NCAA seeding tells you a lot more. Second, even if you're going to remove the Glenn Robinson years, you removed three years when he only played two (and thus removed a No. 1 seed -- though one of the worst No. 1 seeds of all-time, I might add -- and a No. 3 seed) and kept his first year of eligibility. Third, I'm not really sure why you started at 1989 (is that an earlier part of the conversation I missed?). So here goes by seeding, starting with the first year Keady made the tournament with Purdue:

1983: 5

1984: 3

1985: 6

1986: 6

1987: 3

1988: 1

1989: n/a

1990: 2

1991: 7

1992: n/a

1993: 9 (with Robinson)

1994: 1 (with Robinson)

1995: 3

1996: 1

1997: 8

1998: 2

1999: 10 (but made Elite Eight)

2000: 6

2001: n/a

2002: n/a

2003: 9

2004: n/a

2005: n/a

Obviously things started to slip at the turn of the century, but before that Keady made sixteen of eighteen tournaments and only four times with a seed lower than No. 6 (an arbitrary point that I used for "bubble," where the cutoff is probably even worse). Keady was more often a top-two seed (five times) than a seed lower than sixth (four times). I think Keady's career at Purdue was much better than mere bubble-land.

Oh, and the MCDAA roster came out, Kentucky has 5 guys. Could add a 6th if they get Wiggins. The Big Ten has 1. Ugh, I sure hope we don't stop recruiting well. It is fun having the conference be this good again.

Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoosiers.

I think you missed the part where I said I was trying to get Smack fired up. I realize Keady is a hall of fame level coach. I selected the 89 cutoff because that's when I was old enough to really start following though, thus that's my memory of the two programs. While what came before is cool, I didn't see any of it so it doesn't leave as deep an impression on me. Nothing more. Edited by illiniguy

I can't believe we only got one after how awesome the big ten has been this year.

yeah, shows you how dumb he's being when i'm siding with smack and an indiana fan.

Jesus Christ you are a wet blanket. I've said I was trying to get a conversation going with Smack.

Agreed. I would imagine Zak Irvin was close (I find it hard to distinguish between him and Jackson as far as who is the best senior in Indiana). There's still a lot of top-100 talent entering the league next year though; not too worried about the conference recruiting. Though next year's Big Ten does figure to be relatively down compared to the last couple.

Swallowing hard because coming to Smack's defense is about the last thing I want to do

You'll feel better about this after destroying us in Bloomington tomorrow.

To spell it out plainly, your program is in good shape, but isn't (or hasn't been) so good you can look down your noses at anyone else in the conference, save maybe PSU, Nebraska or NU.

I agree whole heartedly with this. I think this relates to Illinois too though and I think there's a couple of UofI fans that are dangerously close to being in the looking-down-your-noses crowd.

I'm not trying to be. I just like to take shots at Weber anyway I can. Just went with the Purdue angle to fire up Smack.

You should've bad mouthed Robbie Hummel.

Ha . . . probably/I hope, but it won't come close to thirty-seven points.

I don't really like doing that I actually enjoyed watching him. I will do it, but I don't like it.

Not that it's overly important since it's media members and a mock selection, but it's nice to see that people do feel that Illinois is pretty securely in at this point. I think if they take care of business at home the rest of the way and beat NW and Iowa on the road (definitely not gimmes) and win a game or two in the BTT we could see them at a 5 or 6 seed, which was unfathomable 2 weeks ago.

For sure. But I can tell you that personally, I haven't felt a whole lot of bluster about Illini hoops for a few years now. I think things are definitely headed in the right direction, but we haven't been very good for a while now. But homers will be homers, and we all have a few.

That said, I'm not about to take any crap from Purdue fans (no offense).

The Iowa/Illinois game could be pretty meaningful, as far as the tournament goes. Unless you count the BTT game last year as meaningful, than it's been a while since we've played a meaningful game. That could be a lot of fun.

Yeah thats the thing. We need to win a title. Been painfully close twice.

Which Purdue fan other than da bum, years ago, is giving you crap? I was defending Keady. There are a lot of Illini fans that mistakenly believe Illinois is a blue blood program. Purdue is a very solid program with good tradition. We've won a lot of games, a lot of B1G titles, and have had limited NCAA tournament success.

You talked about bum bringing up titles and stats from the 50's and older.

Since 1980:

Final Fours Purdue 1, Illinois 2

Elite Eights Purdue 3, Illinois 4

Sweet Sixteens, Purdue 8, Illinois 8

B1G Titles, Purdue 7, Illinois 6

Big Ten Coach of Year, Purdue 10, Illinois 2

Big Ten Player of the Year, Purdue 3, Illinois 4

Consensus All Americans, Purdue 3, Illinois 1 (Brown did it twice though)

Very recent history Purdue has dominated the series until this last game.

Our programs have a lot more in common that you guys ever like to admit. Lots of tradition no title.

And you will not see me slinging any crap. I'm keeping my head low this year. When DJ Byrd and Terone Johnson are your leaders, you don't really have a lot to thump your chest about. Maybe next year...

Scary, smack did start talking crap. Telling us to enjoy it after you've owned us. We know that. It's been a really crappy last six or seven years to be an Illinois fan. We've now had a decent week and feel excited because our coach seems to get it when it comes to recruiting. We don't need a purdue homer to hammer us. We know we've sucked for a decent amount of time. Edited by illiniguy

Lol at the big ten coach of the year. You can wipe your butt with that one.

That was joking post game trash talk, you guys should have beat us in West Lafayette, this is the worst Purdue team in years.

So you cherry pick the least important line in the post. What about the rest of it?

I agree with it. That said the three I care about Illinois is ahead in two of and tied in the other. Thatis the FF, EE, and SS. Thus I think we are a tick better than you, but it's close.

Yes we should have. Had way too many calls go against us in the closing seconds for that to happen though. That's why I found it so ironic Painter got tossed against us.
