Roth said even though Crean didn’t directly address his status, he did tell Roth to use him as a reference for any job applications. He said he appreciated that, but it also allowed him to read between the lines.

You kind of put one and one together there,” Roth said.

So Crean didn't even have a man to man sit down with Roth. What a weirdo.

I'm not really sure what Matt expected to happen given there was no available scholarship for him. He got both his Bachelor's and Masters degrees in 4 years and was part of the Senior Day ceremonies this past spring.

For Crean to sit down and tell him what was happening?

There was no scholarship available for Roth. What would Crean tell him that would make any difference in that regard? Unless Creek's knee(s) exploded again or some of the incoming freshman were declared ineligible then there simply wasn't room for Matt.

Don't let me interrupt the IU/Crean bashing, but this from Roth tonight:

Frustrated by several articles that inaccurately portrayed the close of his basketball career at Indiana, Matt Roth tonight set the record straight.

Roth said he and coach Tom Crean have a great relationship and that the two were in regularly contact throughout the summer.

"At the time, I had several talks with the coaches. I was very aware there were several things that would have to happen for a scholarship to open up with the recruiting success IU is having and the return of IU basketball to where it should be.

"I was well aware of all that. They did everything in their power. There were a lot of things they could not control. I was well aware of that.

Carry on anyway....

Yeah, just ignore the situation and it will go away. Great logic when you're in third grade.

I just don't understand what Roth thought was going to happen that would have allowed him to play a 5th year. I mean Austin Etherington is only going to get accidentally crushed by a bus to make room for a guy like Gary Harris, not Matt Roth.

Where's Patterson's interview?

Sounds like trouble for Etherington.

That's not the point. He pretty explicitly said Crean didn't man up and say sorry Roth it's not going to happen. At least have the balls to deliver the news. The fact that there is an article today of him 'frustrated' that what he said was 'misenterpreted' is laughable spin control.

What he said was pretty clear. He's conducting damage control. Probably got death threats for tarnishing IU basketball.

Spin control from the guy who was supposedly screwed?

What is the motivation for him to do so? Especially if he was wronged as you indicate?

Its a non-story. I'd link the whole article but it is form a subscription service. Its pretty clear he doesn't think IU/Crean have done anything wrong.

Spin control over the biggest non-controversy ever, sure. :good:

He lives in the state of Indiana and wants to work in education. That doesn't exactly go hand in hand with a pissed off Hoosier fan base. That's pretty obvious. Capo, Patterson, Roth, the Tweet. Hell, the man can't buy pants that fit. He's an embarrassment to IU.

Austin may as well be one of the kids from the Final Destination movies. It just isn't going to end well for him.

Wow. He's saying it to find a job.

He obviously needs the help since he received 2 degrees in his 4 years.

I'm done.

If Matt did not recant his lies and deception he would have been treated like the Hoosier version of Steve Bartman in this state.

If its not a big deal why has Roth had multiple interviews about the situation? Why did he have to go on record to correct himself?

Does that make Luke Recker Steve Garvey?

It isn't his fault Da Bum keeps asking him the same question over and over.

Did Luke get as much action as Garvey? I'm not sure how to judge this one...

Hartman is fucked.

edit: Derek Willis who was a 5 Star and ranked in the Top 25 when he comitted to Purdue has fallen all the way to #126. He's going to be recruited over at Kentucky. He would've been a good fit in Purdue's system too. Oh well.

i know he impregnated someone in high school and then left his girlfriend because she was paralyzed from a car crash he caused.

There are like a dozen Reckers in my daughter's class alone.

i know he . . . then left his girlfriend because she was paralyzed from a car crash.

I'm sure I'll get accused of name-dropping here -- though this isn't exactly a big name to drop, ha -- but yuuuup, that happened. I was friends with her before and after the car crash (though I haven't seen her for years and years now). Her attitude and demeanor after the wreck were/have been admirable and impressive.

Also, on more Luke-Recker-is-a-dbag stories: at a party in college, a friend of mine was dancing with his girlfriend. Recker interrupted, stepped between the two, and said "I'm Luke Recker" (and not as an introduction, as the height of arrogance that she should ditch the other guy for him because, well, he was Luke Recker).

Also, his game winning shot in the Big Ten Tournament against IU only counted because the game clock amazingly froze for a bit on the final play. Yup, I'm bitter.
