Here's something that might break your brain. Using fWAR....

                  Cubs A's O's
5+ WAR players 0 0 0
4+ WAR players 1 1 2
3+ WAR players 2 2 0
2+ WAR players 2 5 4
Total wins: 60 93 93

                  Cubs A's O's
<= -0.5 WAR players     7      1     3

The Cubs' problem isn't so much the stars, it's the scrubs.

Interesting that the difference between the O's and Cubs still isn't that much, given the huge difference in wins.

I feel like this conversation would be awesome in the 2013 Cubs thread.

A's up 1 in the bottom of the first already with runners on 2nd and 3rd 1 out. Dempster is pitching for the Rangers, go A's

Does he look small and scared?

NOT A BIG GAME PITCHER, DERP

Stop the big game [expletive]. Demp made it 3 whole innings before imploding and putting his team's fate in the hands of a one game playoff.

I was at first thinking it was going to be a bad thing for the Rangers to lose here and play the Orioles in a 1 game playoff, but the Rangers are playing so poorly right now, and the A's so well, it might be Baltimore's best chance to make it to the ALDS.

A's up 12-5 in the bottom of the eight. Interestingly enough, they've still got a chance at the No. 1 seed if the Yankees lose tonight - I believe they hold the tiebreaker over both the Orioles and Yankees.

Seeing a packed house with rabid fans at an A's game makes it look like the end of a baseball movie when the fans that weren't there at the beginning and didnt care about the team are showing up in droves and acting nuts.

It reminds me of the Marlins. Because regardless of what the A's do in the postseason, those fans will be gone next year.

Come on, who except the meatballs here isn't rooting for the A's? Regardless of the actual details, the narrative of "BILLY 'HE WROTE MONEYBALL, RIGHT?' BEANE MACGYVERS HIMSELF A WORLD SERIES WITH STRING CHEESE AND THE CHANGE HE FOUND UNDER THE COUCH" and the amount of dinosaur heads it would explode is too good to pass up. Edited by Sammy Sofa

I'm rooting for them in the AL except the Orioles. It's all about the fact that the A's have made it multiple times this millenium, and the last time the Orioles made it the name Jeffery Mayer was prominently involved.

But what the A's have done is insanely impressive.

The Rangers should verse themselves on the saga of the 2006 Tigers, who blew a once insurmountable division lead on the last day of the season and took the WC spot all the way to the World Series where they eventually cancelled the World Series because whoever that NL team was that year all got busted for steroids. Of course that Tigers team didn't have to win a single game playoff to get into the ALDS, but hey at least Dempster won't be starting for them.

Anyways, the A's will be most likely playing the Tigers in a rematch of the 2006 ALCS, the last playoff series Oakland has participated in.

The A's have the tiebreaker over the Yankees, but not the Orioles.

The Rangers have the tiebreaker over the Orioles should they lose tonight though.

According to this, the first tiebreaker is head-to-head and the A's went 5-4 against Baltimore this year which means the A's would have the tiebreaker.
