ESPN is doing another one of their top 500 players lists created by some metric or another. I think it was polling several people and averaging the results. Anyways, here are the Cubs players on the list (51-500 revealed so far):

88. Starlin Castro

98. Matt Garza

147. Carlos Marmol

200. Geovany Soto

227. Ryan Dempster

282. Kerry Wood

296. Alfonso Soriano

297. Marlon Byrd

308. David DeJesus

346. Anthony Rizzo

347. Paul Maholm

375. Travis Wood

402. Chris Volstad

407. Randy Wells

447. Jeff Samardzija

472. Darwin Barney

490. Reed Johnson

Too high? Too low?

Former Cubs:

133. Aramis Ramirez

160. Sean Marshall

214. Ricky Nolasco

230. Carlos Pena

240. Scott Downs

246. Ted Lilly

259. Carlos Zambrano

280. Kyle Farnsworth

324. Angel Pagan

365. LaTroy Hawkins

409. Derrek Lee

411. Jason Marquis

428. Andrew Cashner

439. Kevin Gregg

455. Casey McGehee

480. Tom Gorzelanny

Yikes. I'd hate to be the guy that got left off this list. How many players are in the MLB? 510?

......

After Castro and Garza, who is 3rd for us? Dempster, Byrd, Marmol, or Soto? I'll be shocked if we have anyone other than Castro and Garza make the top 125.

So basically this list should include everybody's 8 position starters, plus their top 5 starters, 1 or 2 relievers and 1 or 2 bench players, for 16-17 players per team.

How the hell does Reed Johnson make that list?

It's a poll average. It's based on the perception of such ESPN luminaries as Jim Bowden, Mark Mulder, and Jim Caple.

My guess is people looked at reputation and last year's bubblegum stats. If a reserve currently on the Cubs deserved to make the list, it's Jeff Baker.

Seeing as Derrek Lee, who at least last I checked wasn't currently on a team is listed, they're working with a bigger pool than the 750 players that project to be on a big league 25 man roster by opening day.

They must be simply using existing big league track records. Otherwise, I can't see Wood, Wells, and Volstad all above Casher. Maybe if this list had been out a few months ago we could have substituted Wells for Cashner in the Rizzo trade. No, I'm not serious about that last part.

Updated to included the recently released 351-400 grouping. Only 1 Cub (Travis Wood) and 1 former Cub (LaTroy Hawkins) were in this set of 50.

This is the best thing ever posted here. Drop that dumb ass Voice of Reason from your sig and quote yourself.

Edited the OP to reflect 301-350. 3 Cubs were in this batch of 50, David Dejesus (308), Anthony Rizzo (346) and Paul Maholm (347). The immortal Angel Pagan (324) was the only former Cub in this batch.

what qualifies somebody as a player? Is it anybody on a 40-man? Anybody in an organization? Do you have to have played in the majors?

First link said they started with a list of 600 guys "projected to play in the majors this year", for whatever that's worth.

ESPN's baseball guys have to have heard of you.

They're going to run out of players around 262.

We're down to 251. 3 Cubs and 2 former Cubs in this batch, Kerry Wood (282), Alfonso Soriano (296), and Marlon Byrd (297). A bit high for Soriano. I assumed if he wasnt in the 350-500 range he didnt make the list. But I'm a Sori hater so... Former Cubs Carlos Zambrano (259) and Kyle Fansworth (280) make the list as well.

I know it's not really Sorino's fault, but his contract has to be one of the worst ever.

My prediction on the remaining Cubs are Castro, likely top 50, Soto, Dempster and Marmol probably low-mid 100's. Soto and/or Dempster might be able to sneak into the back of the top 100. I would have expected Baker in there somewhere, but not top 250.
