5/75 for Molina? Yikes.

He's good, but 15 per coming off an outlier season (which wasn't that great)? Even at 5/60 you're paying too much.

But more power to Mozeliak if he wants to go that route, I won't argue.

lol I'm reading Gateway Redbirds, and they were predicting the Molina contract would be around 4 years $46 million. I havent gotten to the part where they discover the the final total yet.

I had SportsCenter on mute and I saw the thing about a 5/70-75M contract for Molina and my first thought was that SportsCenter was making a joke.

I just took a quick poll around my office and they're all excited and think it's well deserved.

A few quotes when I asked "What do you think of you guys extending Molina at 5/75?"

"You're paying for defense... and he's the best defensive catcher we've ever seen." (not sure if "we've" means Cardinal fans or Baseball fans in general)

"Yup. He's by far the best catcher in the majors. Stays healthy, hits well, plays great D."

"Very Nice. Glad he'll be around for the rest of his career."

This is as good as any place for this. Max Marchi has written a couple of articles over at BP about catcher defense. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=16096

According to them it looks like Yadier Molina's defensive abilities a probably overrated because of how great his arm is. His arm saves about 10 runs over a season, but everything else is average. IIRC, he actually rates lower than Soto.

Yep, I'm getting similar sentiment.

Are these diehards or casual fans? I gotta feel like most people are happy that he's back long term but the casual fans dont understand how $15 million a year is excessive for a medium market club like STL.

I don't think there's a dividing line between die hards and casual fans when it comes to appreciating the cost of overpaying for certain players. Plenty of die hards want their favorite players brought back at any cost.
