But sources said remarks made by Ricketts and Team President Crane Kenney at last week’s Cubs’ convention mirrored Ganis’ remarks and angered the rooftop owners.

What'd they say?

Crane alluded to how much of a revenue drain the rooftops are on the team - said $20M - (which is kind of ridiculous even though I hate the RTOs) and Ricketts compared them to a neighbor peering through the window and watching your Showtime shows who gets mad when you close the drapes.

Good thing Crane just got an extension.

I am like David, I thought those comments were odd when I read them, but I figured Crane and Ricketts were not dumb enough to say something that would blow up a potential deal by venting to a bunch of Cub fans/bloggers/media.

Then again, from the actual Sun Times article, it looks like things already didn't look headed toward a resolution last week, so maybe they figured it was time to start the smear campaign.

Seems pointless because I don't know of anybody who is on the rooftops side outside of the rooftops themselves.

I thought I read something about there being optimism that a deal with the rooftops was near either yesterday or Monday.

Plus something about how after 202? they will be completely shut out and worthless. Right?

So they were taken aback by the fact that the Cubs brass and Cubs fans don't have nice things to say about them?

Newsflash, rooftops: You're a collection of parasitic eyesores. Everyone [expletive] hates you.

So we wasted an offseason to try to avoid getting sued, and are now still going to get sued?

I'm not sure they ever thought there would be a point when a lawsuit wouldn't occur.

They were probably never prepared to spend $500m to upgrade the place, and there is no way a jumbotron or other sign would pay for that either. They probably need to wait until additional TV revenue comes in before they can afford to pay for work. So this is all likely a delay on their end while constantly blaming the rooftops and/or the city.

Yeah, that was Loxas's report. And Loxas really seems to be that guy who you just assume the opposite of whatever he reports is true at this point.

That sounds right.

That's a decent theory. You may be on to something.

Rosemont

i don't know if you're being serious, but agreed. just move to wherever you can get the best deal. would've been nice to renovate and have a real park, but it's not going to happen. time to do anything else.

I was half joking. I don't love Rosemont, but I'm sick of this [expletive] and just want the Cubs to get out of this situation by whatever means necessary.

I know it has been discussed before, but if the rooftops do sue, what are their odds of success, with the Cubs having the backing of the city?

I'm not sure if they even need the city's backing...but I'm guessing their odds are pretty good and that they just wanted to avoid the whole process.

The rooftops are desperate and have nowhere else to go, so I wouldn't take the fact that they're willing to go this route to mean that they have or should have any sort of confidence in winning.

I'd take the fact that they're putting up the most contentious portion of all of this, the RF sign, now as a decent sign.

The move would never happen but hilarity would ensue when the rooftops led the charge to sue to keep the cubs in Wrigley

can we go back and put up the bigger sign that was originally approved by the city before we (now) pointlessly acquiesced to the rooftops? and anything else we did to try to create goodwill with them?

Can the Ricketts afford the legal expenses of a lawsuit? Seems like a sound strategy by the rooftop owners.

It's a decent sign, but I'm starting to come around to the notion ownership is dragging things out intentionally and unnecessarily. It just seems like the deck is so stacked against the rooftops that it's like David vs. Goliath, and David doesn't even have a sling.

Do the reno, and tell the rooftops to [expletive] off. If they want to sue to block the construction or get a bunch of the Cubs' money, let them try.

it's sad that we're at the point where i'm not even sure if this is a poor tom ricketts joke. #poortomricketts

Maybe I'm understanding it wrong but the rooftops didn't sue the Cubs directly. They are suing that Gians guy and the Cubs are named as a defendant. Brett has a good write up of it.

This is true. The article makes it seem like it's the first domino to fall though.

You'd think this thing would be so lopsided, but with the way the Cubs are seemingly desperate to avoid a lawsuit it's pretty worrisome.

I don't know law talk but isn't the defendant what you call the people getting sued?

He called them a "discovery" party, which sounds awesome if the Vikings are involved.
