I didn't really want to start a new thread. Brett linked this from his site.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel is expected to announce this week plans for a $300 million 12,000-seat arena for DePaul University at McCormick Place — a proposal that will call for millions in taxpayer dollars, sources tell the Chicago Sun-Times.

Chicago politics at it's finest, after running the Cubs through circles, to pay for their own stadium, Illinois is giving 100 million to DePaul for a new stadium.

[expletive] Rahm

Ha, beat you!!! :P

Honestly, doesn't surprise me one bit they are pulling this crap.

It would be one thing if DePaul was a public school, but it's a private institution. How does that [expletive] scumbag sleep at night?

That's what I was thinking. If it were UIC, that would be one thing, but...

State legislation for a Chicago-owned casino has advanced through the Illinois Senate and is pending in the House. Quinn’s office has warmed to gambling expansion but said it won’t be considered until the Illinois Legislature sends him comprehensive pension reform.

Is this saying that the city will own the casino? That seems like a really, really bad idea. If it's in conjunction with the DePaul deal, then it makes a lot more sense for them to kick in money for that, not exactly fair to the Cubs, but makes more sense.

So DePaul would be associated some way with the casino?

The way I read it, they're trying to develop the entire area to eventually make it into a place to go for the casino. I imagine the proposed hotels and having a building you could have concerts/shows in would play into that. So no, not directly, but having a multi-use building right there would certainly help.

That's hilarious, I love how the hypocritical Catholic church picks and choses their battles. "Hey let's go after those evil gays", but we'll support pedophiles and gambling vices.

I don't recall DePaul going after those evil gays or supporting pedophiles.

They take their direction from the Archdiocese don't they?

It's a really progressive and very diverse school (even compared to a lot of other major colleges/universities). Lumping them in with "the Catholic Church" like it's some monolithic bogeyman is pretty far off.

DePaul is pretty left-wing for a Catholic school. Extended benefits to same sex partners and covered birth control when they didn't have to.

I like how 30-40 seconds into the video as you are "walking up the steps" to the field they hold on a shot of LF. They don't mention the jumbotron but the area is wide open and begging for something to fill the void.

Ha, yeah. I expected an updated video but that's the same one from the presentation at the convention, when the Jumbotron was just speculation.
