Surprising, but at the same time I'd have a hard time arguing either of those decisions was a bad one.

I think Wells is going to be dealt personally.

I think it means the front office is probably planning on trading a starter in the first couple months. Otherwise with Wood in AAA there's little reason not to use Wells in long relief and then send him to Iowa to get stretched out if/when an injury hits. Especially when the last several spots in the bullpen are not exactly cream of the crop choices.

So what, Wood to the pen? I don't think I like that.

No, Wood got optioned too.

Wood also officially sent down. As was Sappelt, Tolbert, Lalli, Parker and Maine.

As Brett over at BN put it: Maybe winning the PCL is the new market inefficiency?

Both a little surprising to me, although Wells moreso.

You're surprised they want castillo to get every day ABs?

A little. Although I think that's because I keep getting them mixed up. Castillo is the one with a little power potential.

He's te one that's an actual prospect and not a backup catcher.

I'd have loved to see Wells traded, but I'm assuming if there was any real interest he'd have been before being optioned. Still, it won't surprise me if he's traded sooner than later. He is an experienced, serviceable back of the rotation guy.

Hooray for no Scott Maine!

So has the pen been decided yet?

Marmol

K. Wood

Russell

Dolis

Corpas

Castillo

Am I forgetting someone?

I'm still surprised that the Cubs could get Wells through waivers, but more power to us if they did get him through. Sure feels like they are hoping for a trade to happen, hence keeping Wells on regular starting duty so he can get his innings/work in.

He had one more option.

Jed said today that the pen wasn't decided yet. Marmol, Wood, and Russell are locks, and I haven't paid enough attention to who else is still in MLB camp. De la Cruz and new guy Camp are probably in the mix.

He had to go through optional waivers because of how much service time he had. So if he gets to the minor leagues, no one claimed him (although it is a courtesy not to claim players in that situation since the Cubs could pull him back).

The bullpen situation is not resolved, with two spots still open and Rodrigo Lopez, Manny Corpas, Frankie De La Cruz and Lendy Castillo in the running.
