I fugure this would be a good place to keep these types of things rather than start a new thread each time or letting them get lost in the shuffle of the misc. transactions thread.

Minor league deals w/invites

Trevor Miller

Ryan Rowland Smith

Rodrigo Lopez

Manny Corpas

Jason Jaramillo

Alfredo Amezaga

Matt Tolbert

Edger Gonzalez

Joe Mather

I guess these guys could be of value down the line if we do decide on a mid season purge of guys like Soto, Marmol, Soriano, DeWitt, Byrd, Baker, Russell, Dempster, Samardzjia, and Wells. Personally, if the situation came up I'd rather give some of our older minor leaguers like Marquez Smith, Mota, Weathers, Jay Jackson, and Cabrera the shot over these guys.

Ah, come on now. WHO figured this would be a good idea?

It's almost as if there isn't a misc FA thread for all this BS.

Anything regarding a player potentially on the cubs 25 man roster should be worthy of its own thread. The last thread on page 1 hasn't been posted in for two weeks, we'll live.

So Jason Jaramillo, Trever Miller, Matt Tolbert, Alfredo Amezaga, Joe Mather, Edger Gonzalez, and Bobby Scales each should have had their own thread?

Yeah.

That or make a minor cub's move thread instead of throwing them in with the rest of the league.

Cubs Claim Adrian Cardenas

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [February 6 at 4:02pm CST]

The Cubs claimed Adrian Cardenas off of waivers from the Athletics, the A's announced.

Former 1st rounder, top prospect, 24 years old, plays all over the infield. Seems intriguing enough, certainly more so than most of the other scrap heapers we've scraped up.

I like this, although mildly surprised with a DeWitt DFA. That said, Cardenas essentially replaces LeMahieu in the upper levels for us, while giving us a bit more upside than DeWitt.

Man, I remember when Cardenas was going to be the next big thing at 2nd. That power never came around, but he still could find a nice role as a utility option.

Cubs claimed some journeyman pitcher from the Brewers.

Cubs Claim Frankie De La Cruz

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [March 16 at 1:07pm CST]

The Cubs claimed right-hander Frankie De La Cruz off of waivers from the Brewers, Tom‏ Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel tweets.

De La Cruz made 11 appearances with the 2011 Brewers, posting a 2.77 ERA with nine strikeouts and five walks. The 28-year-old spent most of last year as a starter at Triple-A, where he had a 3.88 ERA with 8.3 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9 in 137 innings.

Looks like he's had several cups of coffee between the Tigers, Marlins, and Padres before last years stint with the Brewers and was a piece of the Cabrera/Willis trade.

He'll fill in behind Garza, Dempster, Maholm, Wood, Volstad, Wells, Samardzjia, Coleman, Lopez, Jackson, Sonnenstine and Robertson as our 13 starter.

Andy Sonnenstine elected free agency today.I don't get why guys like this opt out of their minor league deals. While I'm sure he'll be able to get another minor league deal, I can't imagine he'd have any more of a chance of earning a big league call up.

I'm not sure Sonnanstine cracked the Top 10 possible starters. He wasn't ever going to pitch in Chicago, so refusing the assignment gives him the chance to latch on to a team with less depth, potentially waiting until injury strikes somewhere.

I was thinking that as well, with so much rotstion depth, but I can't imagine too many teams not having at least a few big league ready backup starters as good as or better than Sonnenstine so his best bet to get back to the bigs could be the pen, in which case he'd have as good a chance with us as anyone.

Cubs signed RHP Shawn Camp to a minor league contract.

Camp was released by the Mariners last week despite allowing only two runs in 8 1/3 spring innings. He will function as organizational relief depth for the Cubs.

He's had a few years as a decent reliever for the Blue Jays. Not bad to have as depth.

He was a 1.4 WAR guy in 2012, which is pretty good for a middle reliever. Still, he's a 36 year old reliever, so I'mm guessing he's depth chart fodder in case Dolis or Corpas falter early on.

Valbuena is a very nice pickup. Good defender that can play multiple infield positions and has hit pretty well at AAA while only being 26 years old. He should get the chance to play quite a bit, as he has more future value than a Tolbert or Amezaga.
