No SS should be in until Trammel is in.

I was watching Clubhouse Confidential the other day, and the guy they had on from BP was saying they were backing off their support of Trammel. Said something about their new defensive evaluations/metrics suggesting that they had been overrating his defensive ability/contributions.

I don't care. Trammell was my favorite non-cub growing up. I am skeptical of current defensive metrics. Defensive metrics for players 15-30 years ago are almost meaningless to me.

Somewhat surprised about McGriff. Very susprised about Bagwell. As good as we was, like Larkin, he spent his entire career with one team which tends to hold some werght with the voters. Larry Walker is a double shock that not only did he get in but how few votes he got. 383 career HR. and a 313/.400/.565 slash line. He was never implicated for any PEDs was he? Palmeiro and his 569 HR will probably end up in the asterisk section with Bonds, Sosa, McGwire, and Clemans.

It's looking more and more like the writers are going to stand their ground and keep McGwire out of the hall, and there's no reason to think they won't to the same to Sammy, but can they really do the same to Bonds and Clemens? The Mark and Sammy show did a great job of bringing fans back to baseball but Bonds and Clemens are two of the greatest in the history of the game.

i'm assuming you meant bonds and clemens.

verducci and rosenthal were talking about this on mlb network, and they think bonds and clemens will still get in eventually, but no chance on the first ballot. sosa will be lumped in with mcgwire and never get in.

So what percentage of the voters just won't vote for any slugger from the 90s/aughts at this point? It's non-zero, right?

Interested to see what happens when Thomas and Griffey get on the ballot in a couple of years. How can you justify voting Thomas and not Bagwell? I hope one of these era sluggers gets in somehow because I think that would slowly open things up for everyone else that deserves to be in there. It's a disgrace that people aren't voting for Bagwell just for playing in the wrong era.

I think Bagwell will get in. Thomas has to. No question about Griffey. Until he stated getting hurt he was the ultimate 5 tool player. These guys were the elite of an era and the writers need to get off their high horse and if there is going to be a hall of fame, everyone of them should be in it. And while they're at it, let in Shoeless Joe and Charlie Hustle. It's time.

Have you ever considered the reason gambling has basically been a non issue in baseball since 1920 is because of the lifetime ban that goes with gambling on games or throwing games? I understand it seems harsh, but I would bet that PEDs would quickly become a non issue if a lifetime ban from baseball was step 1 of punishment.(I am not advocating this but making the point)

I would like to hear what some of the writers were thinking in voting in Larkin but not voting Trammell.

Maybe true with Rose. However, there was no conviction or even solid evidence against Joe Jackson and he was given a lifetime ban along with 7 others, some of whom deserved it more than others as an example set by an old man who died nearly 70 years ago. Maybe he did know more than the books and movies tell us and he overplayed the illiterate hick card as a defense, but I think he's served his time.

??? at minimum he took money and knew that his fellow teammates were throwing games. It is common knowledge that the trial was also fixed. I don't care one way or another about these guys making the Hall, but you have to admit that baseball was full of gambling and game fixing before 1920 and probably has been relatively clean of the problem since. I think players can easily see the punishment that the Black Sox and Rose received and probably quickly think that gambling on baseball is a real bad idea.

Interesting trivia bit that is now true: Every World Series winner prior to the 1994 strike has had a hall of famer on it. It used to be pre-1990, but now Larkin is in.

At a glance, that trend is gonna have some trouble continuing.

97 Marlins: Sheffield is probably the best bet, but may not get in until a Veterans Committee forgets what a prick he was. Kevin Brown may get some consideration 20 years from now too. Renteria has a shot if he can reverse the trend and grab a few hundred more hits.

02 Angels: Could also be a problem. K-Rod has 297 saves and turns just 30 in January. Probably their best bet. Otherwise a committee has to get a little crazy and vote David Eckstein, Troy Glaus or Tim Salmon in. Lackey is halfway to a Jack Morris career, but the 2nd half of that is the hardest.

After that you're in the clear til 08 and 09, but then you're stuck predicting what guys like Hamels and Lincecum are gonna do.
