can you not [expletive] hear lovie? why the hell would he lie about something like this?

Isn't this typical Lovie though? Hasn't he pretty much lied in the past in certain situations? He is very guarded in situations like this and the new GM is even more so.

So is the "personal issue" that Urlacher is dealing with his lack of a contract past this year?

I can't imagine he would be excused from practice as part of negotiations. He's under contract, guys who sit out to renegotiate are subject to fines.

And now these fines can't be absorbed into the contract. They have to be paid. Maybe this is the Bears way of getting around this.

guarded, but not totally lying. For instance typical lovie might say a player being held out for precautionary reasons when he is actually hurt. But to just make up personal issues to cover an injury? Can't think of that ever happening.

Urlacher is back at practice, but still out injured.

Chris Spencer needs to lose some reps. He got his ass kicked by 1st and 2nd teamers for Denver. Edwin Williams is a much better player, not to mention Chris Williams at LG.

According to twitter, Chris Williams is getting about 50% of the reps at LT with the first team today. Webb getting the others.

yeah, they are panicking.

they stubbornly ignored LT this offseason and now they're scared.

They've ignored LT for much more than just this offseason, but yeah.

The play of Shea McClellin in last Thursday’s preseason game against the Denver Broncos has earned the rookie defensive end a major promotion and has the Bears looking at changes to the foundation of their nickel pass rush.

McClellin, who had a sack, two quarterback hits and a tackle for loss against the Denver Broncos, was moved up with the No. 1 unit opposite Julius Peppers. Israel Idonije, perhaps the Bears’ most versatile defensive lineman and who has played tackle during his Bears career, moved inside to tackle with Henry Melton.

McClellin continued to make plays in full-team sessions. He surprised Gabe Carimi with a right-handed club move a’la Reggie White and beat the right tackle back to the inside.

(For the record, he also tried it again later in practice. He may as well have been forearming a redwood. Advantage: Carimi)

I had a feeling they would move izzy back to DT.

Yep, I called for it a couple weeks ago. It only makes sense. The Bears have 4-5 DTs that are going to make the roster, only Melton has proven to be a pass rusher. Paea has shown flashes, but that still leaves just those 2. Price and Toeina are not pass rushers.

Urlacher spoke to the media Sunday and confirmed that he was away from camp to deal with personal issues and not to get his sore left knee evaluated by other doctors. He said he’s working with the team’s medical staff to fix the problem, but admits that he isn’t sure when he will be able to return to practice. Not that he’s much concerned with that.

“September 9th I’ll be ready to play for sure. That’s really all that matters to me,” Urlacher said, via Zach Zaidman of the Bears’ radio broadcasting team. “I’d love to be out there, but I’m not going to put myself in jeopardy of missing the first game.”

There isn't much to be gained from Urlacher practicing since he needs to rest that knee anyway.

I'll be concerned if the regular season starts and he's not there, or his performance is impacted.

Crap - Stephen Paea in a walking boot. Left ankle injury.

I thought Roach looked pretty good in place of Urlacher on Thursday night. Obviously, he's no Urlacher, but I won't be too worried if Urlacher has to miss a couple games this season. Think he has been a better MLB the last couple times he's played it than he's been a SLB. FWIW, I also thought JT Thomas was pretty good too.

Yeah, I agree with all of these sentiments. I really liked Roach in the middle, JT Thomas looked really good as well. McClellin was fantastic. I like the depth at CB with the addition of Kelvin Hayden.

Really like the idea of Idonije moving to the inside on occasion, also. Wootton forced a couple of holding calls on Clady and still got really good penetration to the pocket. Nate Collins scored some points in game 1 as well.

Was kind of hoping to see some throws to Evan Rodriguez. I think the only pass that went his way ended up being a defensive pass interference call.

Brad Biggs ‏@BradBiggs

#Bears DT Stephen Paea suffers setback with sprained left ankle. Wearing walking boot. Says it's a "mid-ankle sprain" not dreaded high.

Zach Zaidman ‏@ZachZaidman

Paea says it's a mid-ankle sprain. Timetable is 1-2 weeks.

This defense has never been able to stay afloat with Urlacher out. This year would be no exception.

This defense has never had Urlacher out while Julius Peppers has been here. Just saying.

Also, this offense is going to be the best we've ever seen (at least since 1995) and will be capable of outscoring most teams even without an elite defense.

That's obviously not to say I don't think Urlacher is very valuable. We're a better team with him and it would suck to have him miss any significant time.

Posted

I hope the offense is as good as predicted. If Urlacher misses significant time, I think we will need it.

I get what you are saying about Urlacher/Peppers, but I still would expect to struggle on D without Urlacher. If we don't, and it's because Peppers provides additional pressure / creates havok -- then that's a nice bonus.

I'm still just going to expect him to be there week 1 until proven otherwise.
