There's way too much talent on the current roster for a guy like this.

I mean, Byrd and/or Soriano has to be gone for this to make any sense whatsoever.

If they are at all serious about the defense and baserunning thing, I'm assuming Campana makes the team.

My guess is we'll give him a major league deal this time. Maybe 1.5ish or so. Nothing to get worked up over.

That sure as [expletive] is something to get worked up over.

How else is Theo going to spend the money he's savings by not signing/overpaying Fielder, Darvish, Wilson, or anyone else that can actually help us win?? Johnson seems to fit right in with the other placeholders he's acquired so far this offseason.

As long as next season looks to be a terrible one, they need to at least unload Byrd and give CF to Jackson.

I thought Johnson had a very good season except for his annual back flair up.

The results at the plate were pretty good, but almost certainly unsustainable.

Holy crap, he walked 5 times and struck out 63 times in just 266 PA?

If next season is going to be terrible, they need to start someone else in CF for 2 months and then give CF to Jackson.

Eh, why bother wasting another players cheap years for a lost season? We've already pissed away Castro's pre-arb time.

Why? The new guys don't know Campana. Reed is a decent backup OFer. It's doubtful we'll have both Soriano and Byrd by spring training and they've already said Brett is starting the year in AAA.

Ideally, Reed's contract is small enough that he can be released after those 2 months. I don't see Jackson making the team out of spring with what they currently have.

But how do they know Reed Johnson? After all he wasn't in the Boston or San Diego system last year, and those are clearly the only players they could know anything about.

This is the exact same fritter away a million here, a million there idiocy that Hendry was the worst at.

Who the F cares who they "know"? That's something Dusty Baker would have said while giving a crappy veteran 500 PA to show what he can do in front of Dusty's eyes. You don't need to know the players.

The Cubs may be in Florida Panthers mode. If they aren't going to spend their budget on impact players they almost have to waste millions on crappy veterans just to make it look like they are willing to spend.

Give Hendry credit - in addition to passing out money to the Grabows and Koyies, he did mix in giving contracts to actual baseball players once in a while.

And was HBP 11 times. He is the living definition of Hacking Grinder.
