Hell 84 games could be enough to win the division next year. Let's get this tubby bastard signed.

This was the thought that came to me. The division was already looking very weakened with Pujols and Prince both leaving it. Now with Braun out for 50 games, the Brewers (who I consider the only actual good team in the division) may well not be able to reach that 90 win mark.

This makes it that much more possible for the Cubs to contend in 2012 and that much more important that we don't engage in a 3-5 year unnecessary rebuilding process.

This season could likely be a huge turning point for the division. How to the Cardinals move on post Pujols? Do the Cubs try to win now with Fielder and a few other teams? The Reds could really use a frontline starter and certainly have the chips to get one with Votto or Alonzo, and even then how good are they really? The Brewers could be the favorites, but if they dont like the way things are going by July they can really help their future by moving Greinke, Marcum, K Rod, and Hart. The Phillies are the league favs once again but the rest of the NL doesn't have anything else awe inspiring. If we land Fielder and get good seasons out of Zambrano, Soto, Stewart, DeJesus, and whoever we keep of Byrd and Soriano there's no reason we can't contend. Im not saying we have a 95 game winner in our hands, but especially with the 2 added playoff spots(I think that starts this coming season) it should be an interesting sesason. We could use a front line starter but if we don't get one now perhaps we can in the summer if we contend.

I think the Cardinals are still going to be pretty good with Wainwright, Carpenter and Garcia at the top of their rotation. They won't be a World Series team again, but they'll be pretty good.

The Cubs' chances have certainly improved in the past few days, but I don't see Theo/Jed doing anything too divergent from their strategy just because of Braun.

I think a lot of people are forgetting the Reds were also quite a bit better than the Cubs last season. I think all this regression by the Cubs competition is good, but I think the Reds are much closer right now than the Cubs are to taking advantage.

seriously? if the 2011 cardinals can win the world series, any team ever can.

People also underestimate the fact that taking Pujols and Fielder out of their lineups gives teams a chance to pitch around players like Holliday and Braun. Having Braun out of the lineup really hurts the Brewers (assuming they lose Fielder).

Yes, but if we reloaded the 2011 season starting in April, do you think things would play out that way again?

I didn't think so.

A team can make an improbable run, that happens from time to time. But repeating that is a whole other issue. Lightning striking twice and whatnot. I'm obviously not saying it can't happen, but like last year, there will be several teams better than the Cardinals in 2012. The odds are simply against it happening again.

I should have said the Cardinals very likely aren't a world series team again.

The Cardinals just lost one of the greatest players in the history of baseball. The Brewers are (likely) losing one of their two star position players, while the other (may/will be?) suspended for nearly a third of the season.

This is when a major market team should strike, flex their muscles, and try to win the division this year. Hopefully that happens.

How do you mean flex their muscles? I think it would be easy to make some knee jerk moves that will really improve the Cubs chances this year. I would rather lay a foundation that improves the Cubs chances every year. Since the playoffs are a crap shot at times, I would prefer that the Cubs make the playoffs as often as possible. I am not against getting Fielder or Darvish or anyone that has talent, but I would be very wary of giving multiple contracts this off season that will turn into big gambles over several years because their appears to be a chance at a chance this year. If the downside of Fielder and Darvish come true, we could easily be in worse shape in 3 yrs than we are now.

Flexing their muscles by signing free agents (I'm thinking Fielder, specifically). I'm not sure why every time someone posts that they want to sign free agents, they should also be required to post "to a non-crazy contract." That seems implicit. Of course I don't want Fielder signed to a 10-year, $250-million contract a la Pujols. Of course I don't want knee-jerk moves. I do, however, want moves designed to win this year. That's going to have to entail signing, or trading for, an elite player(s).

As Theo said, winning is precious. Winning in the NL Central has just become much, much easier and the Cubs should seize on this precious opportunity.

So the Reds are probably the favorite at this point and I think the Cubs are still behind the Cardinals. What would you suggest the Cubs do to get past them, beyond signing Fielder?

Define foundation? Isn't signing Fielder and/or Darvish laying a foundation?

Maybe Darvish. Maybe Cespedes. Maybe swinging another Garza-type trade. Maybe Jackson, who would help, though he's not as big of a splash. I don't have the blueprint -- people smarter about baseball than me are in charge -- but a blueprint does exist that doesn't have to mortgage the future. What I want is for management to live up to their words about two fronts and the "preciousness" of winning. It's early and I'm not saying they can't or won't. But the Cubs have been handed a great opportunity. I want them to take advantage of that.

Posted

I really don't see any way we can count on Cespedes to help immediately.

To have a shot to win the division in 2012, I see three paths:

1) Fielder and Darvish

2) Fielder and two decent starting pitchers to slot in at four and five.

3) Some wild combination of trades that no one is even thinking about right now.

Nobody except B2B anyway.

It may be or they may both really have bad contracts in 3 yrs. If you truly believe that it is foundation building, than yes make the deals. If however you think that there is a good chance that they may be bad contracts down the road than I do not think it is a good idea to sign them just because the Cards and Brewers may struggle to win 85 games this year.

Not sure if anyone else saw/ posted this but I was watching Hot Stove on the MLB and Gammons said the Cubs don't have the money to sign Fielder right now. Gammons of course is usually wrong about anything not Red Sox related so grain of salt and all.

Yup. They had an offer out for Pujols, but when that fell through they spent the money on strippers, blow, and that guy they claimed off waivers from the Royals. And we thought that Hendry spent poorly.

I don't know that I'd call that "spending poorly". It depends on the quality of the blow, how the strippers look, what happens in the VIP room, and what you can get for Barney.

I was told by a Cardinals fan today that they hope Stl doesn't go after Prince because "The Cardinals don't have room on their team for a thug. That's all Prince is. The Cardinals don't sign/trade for thugs. Period."

I laughed.

If you didn't call that person on his racism and tell him to go [expletive] himself, you have chosen poorly.
