Figured I'd go ahead and do this now that Pujols signed and the other thread is such a hot mess.

So apparently we don't have the money to sign him?

Looks okay to me. The other one is a confusing ramble of 160 pages that mostly dealt with Pujols. We aren't bumping off any active threads by clarifying for Prince.

How did the other one mostly deal with Pujols? He just signed and has been most talked about more recently because of the news cycle, but that thread has been Pujols/Fielder all along, and all about the idea of the Cubs desperate for 1B and having 2 potential options to acquire free agent stud 1B.

Speaking of markets, what the heck is Fielder's now?

All I can think of is:

Cubs

Brewers

Marlins (they claim to be out)

Blue Jays (maybe?)

Mariners

Anyone else?

I doubt the Cards go that route.

Well right...we're splitting one rambling thread into two rambling threads. I just don't think much is gained. *shrug*

Rangers have been mentioned, and also have supposedly claimed to be out.

My guess is the Cubs were in the Cardinals bid to increase the price for the Cardinals and/or bring in other bidders, and I kind of feel Seattle is there just to do a favor their guy. It doesn't make sense for him to go there and have his power sapped by that stadium, especially if he wants to eventually sign another deal elsewhere.

If I had to guess, I'd say

Cubs

Brewers

Blue Jays

Rangers

Cards were only willing to go where they did with Pujols because he was iconic and the could market his assault on the record books.

Nolan Ryan says the Rangers aren't in, but I'm not buying it. Particularly after this morning's events.

The Mariners have a putrid offense (yes, worse than ours), a huge ballpark and no hint that I'm aware of that they'd spend to surround Prince with any real talent. And now they're well behind two other teams in their division in terms of being able to compete. Therefore I don't buy Seattle as a real possibility.

I feel like Fielder doesn't make sense for the Rangers at the price he'll carry. They need to focus on pitching way more than they do on offense.

I guess anything can happen, but where in the world do you guys see how the Brewers are still contenders for Prince?

They just had to put $11 to $13 million in the budget for a set up guy, and have to give raises to guys like Marcum while also filling the shortstop hole, etc. They have like $80 million tied up into 14 players already.

This is now a perfect opportunity for Cubs ownership and the new front office to make a big run at Fielder.

“As to what level of interest [the Cubs have] you should probably ask them,” Fielder's agent Scott Boras said Wednesday. “Any team that wants to get better whether they are a younger team or a veteran team or a club that wants to win now, not many teams that are in need can pass up a core player like this.”

Fielder wants at least a seven-year deal, and now because of Pujols' contract, likely 10. The Cubs Texas Rangers, Miami Marlins and now possibly the Cardinals will be in hot pursuit of Fielder, according to industry sources.

At 27, Fielder is the type of young, dominant player the Cubs would like to build a championship team around. Look for the Cubs to move aggressively in a smart way toward signing Fielder while also concentrating on the international market. Right-handed pitcher Yu Darvish has committed to posting, and the Cubs will make a bid on his services. They will also take a run at Cuban outfieder Yoenis Cespedes, who is being courted by seven or eight teams. The bidding on Cespedes could go as high as $50 million.

At some point Boras will claim he has a 10 year offer for Prince, but there's no way in hell. 6-7 max.
