Some of those teams will struggle to break even. But not going would be almost fatal for any of those such schools.

There's cfb on tv all the damn time if you just want more. I can't believe there are more than a handful of people that actively want to watch ULL and SDSU.

I don't necessarily want to watch it but I'll probably have it on or keep an eye on it to see if it ends up being an exciting game. Your point is valid, though, since I'm probably in the minority with that sentiment.

Way too many bowls. Mediocre teams playing in said bowls.

I don't really buy into the notion that there is too much football.

When it's UL-Lafayette vs. San Diego State, I do.

Not that I care. I know I don't have to watch it, and it's just a money grab. But it sort of illustrates how stupid college football really is.

I don't really see how it illustrates that college football is stupid if they can find a financially viable way to have a couple mediocre teams play late in the year.

To be fair, it's not really financially viable. The schools playing in these games pretty much all take a bath financially because of unsold tickets.

I didn't say profitable, I said viable. If it wasn't, they wouldn't go.

none of the bcs games are compelling in the least

If can get past the stupidity of 2 SEC teams playing for the title, I don't see how Oklahoma State - Stanford isn't exciting. Oregon - Wisky should be decent too. The Orange Bowl sucks every year because it's the crappy Big East champion playing the slightly less crapy ACC champion.

From an outsiders perspective I could totally see Michigan vs. Virginia Tech being completely unappealing. Overall I feel like its below average but not horrible.

If Bama wins can we please have a split MNC with the winner of OSU/Stanford.

Wait, what? No New Years Day bowl games?

That's a misprint, right?

New Years is on a Sunday so the NFL gets that day, which is also Week 17. The same thing happened in the 05 season, which was the last time New Years Day was on a Sunday.

Wouldn't the major bowl games be better on Saturday the 31st rather than Monday afternoon when a lot of people are back at work already? That would probably hurt the ratings. Granted, New Year's Eve probably isn't the best day, but it would be better than a weekday.

I imagine most offices are closed on the 2nd.

Off topic, but how does Matt Barkley not finish as a finalist for the Heisman? Did USC get sanctioned against their players receiving awards, too?

By the time anyone noticed how good he's been, it was too late to jump past the entrenched folks on most ballots, I think. I'm not sure who you'd bump out of the existing 5 to make room for him either, though. If I had a vote I'd pick RG3.

How about Honey Badger?

he obviously wouldn't care

Good, because he definitely wasn't better than Barkley.

While I'm on the subject of crimes against USC, isnt there some sort of financial penalty they could face instead of the players being penalized for something that happened when they were high schoolers?

Fun fact: There were two coaches in the final coaches poll that voted Oklahoma State lower than third. One of them? Nick Saban. The other? Stanford coach David Shaw, who put Stanford 3rd.

Pinkel, Cutcliffe, and Marrone all put OSU 4th, and Troy Calhoun put them 5th.

Bah, misread an article that said "two coaches who put OSU lower than third" that I read "the two coaches who put OSU lower than third".

Still, that's a bit of a conflict of interest, especially for 1/3 of the BCS factor.

A couple of Harris voters had some pretty hilarious ballots:

In addition to voting Oklahoma State sixth, Derrick Mayes may have had the most curious ballot. He was one of two to give Clemson its highest ranking, at No. 8. He gave five-loss Auburn its only top-20 ranking, at No. 18. He ranked three Big East teams: No. 20 West Virginia, No. 22 Louisville (which also has five losses) and No. 23 Rutgers (but did not rank Big East tri-champ Cincinnati). He did not rank Georgia. Mayes valued some head-to-head wins, including Michigan State over Michigan, Clemson over Virginia Tech, Baylor over TCU and Oklahoma over Kansas State. One of the head-to-head wins Mayes ignored, though, was Georgia’s 45-7 victory over Auburn.

And this one:

Van Note gave the Badgers their highest ranking, at No. 3. In addition to giving Wisconsin its highest ranking, Van Note was the most Big Ten-friendly voter, with three teams from the league in his top 10, with Michigan State at No. 6 and Michigan at No. 10.
