Every time someone goes for 2 before the final 7 minutes of the 4th quarter, it befuddles me. It seems like every single time they end up in a situation later where that costs them.

Yeah, I was saying the same thing. You have 3 timeouts and :50 left at the 25. You took about a minute to drive about 50 yards. Why would you take the ball out of your 4th year senior QB, one of the best in college FB history and entrust a freshman kicker who already missed one kick?

So I was at a lunch today with mostly Illinois fans of varying levels. To a man they were cheering for Va Tech tonight. They were surprised that I was cheering for Michigan. I just mentioned that I always cheer for B1G in non conference games. I also said that my guess is that probably at least 1/3 of all MSU fans were probably pulling for Michigan to win but wouldn't mind if they lost, which is really were I am. Anyway the reason I point this out is because living in Illinois country I have noticed that Illinois fans seem to cheer against Michigan and OSU no matter what. I don't get this. Illinois is nothing more than a conference rival of either school. Illinois record against Penn St is just as bad but they do not seem to hate them, at least not until recently. Illinois fans just seem to have no conference pride when it comes to football. I have also noticed that in BB Illinois fans seem to have a lot of conference pride when it comes to the Tourney. They seem to cheer for Michigan and OSU with no problem in the Tourney.

I understand that. I am a MSU fan, we have probably been even worse than Illinois in my lifetime and we have a real rivalry with Michigan...but many of us MSU fans still cheer for Michigan and OSU in bowl games

Illinois seems to be in a group with Minnesota, Northwestern, Indiana and Wisconsin as teams that where stuck at the bottom for a while in recent decades. MSU is also used to being 2nd fiddle in their own state, while Illinois probably feels like they should be among the big boys.

I don't think MSU has been as bad as Illinois has been a few years, but we also have not been to the Rose Bowl in 25 yrs and that 1 is the only one of my lifetime. Illinois has been to 2 Rose Bowls and a Sugar Bowl since I have lived here. I would say that neither has been anything special in my lifetime.

Living in UM country for 8 years, I'd say it's rare for UM and MSU fans to cheer for each other's school. And I've been an Iowa fan as long as I've been alive and I've never cheered for another team based solely on conference affiliation. I understand wanting the conference to appear strong. But schadenfreude typically wins out for me.
