Does this sound like too much?

1. Garza and Marshall for Montero, Banuelos, and Nunez

2. Soto, Marmol, and Soriano(eatling 80-95% of his contract) for James Shields and maybe Brignac

3. Russell, Vitters, and Castillo for Headley and Blanks

4. LeMahieu, Colvin, Maine, and DeWitt for Street and Stewart

Opening day:

1B ?

2B Nunez/Stewart

SS Castro

3B Headley

LF Blanks

CF Jackson

RF DeJesus

C Montero

SP Shields

SP Z

SP Demp

SP Cashner

SP Wells

CL Street

BP Wood

BP Carpenter

BP Beliveau

BP Dolis

BP Guzman

BP Gaub

Bench Stewart/Nunez

Bench Byrd

Bench Brignac

Bench Baker/Barney/LaHair/Campana

Bench Clevenger

A lot of house cleaning, a lot of new faces. Obviously, 1B dictats how the lineup will be and could be anything from Fielder to LaHair.

Why would Tampa trade for an $8MM closer and a C going to arbitration and a guy who is at the end of his career for a top flight starter that they would only trade to save money? Come on man.

The Shields trade isn't anything the Rays seem like they'd do. First, they're not going to add payroll in a trade involving him. Second, they'd almost definitely target young cheap guys or upper level prospects. thirdly and most importantly, other teams in the league have young cheap guys or upper level prospects they CAN deal for a guy like Shields. We don't match up well with them at all.

Your #s 1, 3 and 4 might be doable, though I'll admit I have no idea how even those trades would be. #2 would get you laughed at by the Rays. I'd love to see it, but it wouldn't even start the conversation.

I only entertained the Shields idea because the Rays have said they'll trade Nieman or Davis for a starting catcher and have also been in search of offense and I think a closer so if we gave them al 3 maybe they'd give up Shields.

Didn't really know where to put this...

Carlos pena has decided he will NOT accept arbitration. #cubs

Was there ever really a concern that he would?

Slight, yeah

Marshall should be untouchable, he was the only one that has stayed healthy and was consistent from day one of the season. He should be given a raise as a thank you for last season

Nobody not named Starlin Castro should be untouchable, especially a guy whose contract expires at the end of the year. Additionally, the Cubs view him as a reliever and he's expressed his desire to be a starter in the past and if another team views him as such that will make him all the more expensive next year.

From Yahoo Winter Meetings chat:

'Duk: Buehrle guesses: Marlins, Nats & Cards?

'Duk: Maybe replace Cards with Cubs. I don't know. That third team could be anyone.

Judging by the contract he's looking for, I don't think the Cubs are even a remote possibility.

Cubs, rox, dbacks, others trying for kuroda. May go back to japan tho.

There's that ambiguous word cleansing him of any misleading reports. Keep it up, Jon

Love this. A Garza/Kuroda/Z/Dempster/1 of Cashner/Wells/Samardzija is definitely a good enough rotation to compete for the division if we can add a few good/decent bats.

I love Kuroda. He probably wont require more than a 1-2 year deal and we should be able to net a decent haul of prospects if we decide to trade him at some point. He's a great example of a worthwhile short term signing.

Oh, and didn't see this anywhere else:

Huston Street to Padres for PTBNL.

As an aside, everybody pronounces PTBNL as "put-bunnell" in their heads, right?

I actually pronounce it as "a player to be named later".

There was a slight discussion of this in the Marmol thread.

Ken_Rosenthal: Source: K-Rod may accept arbitration from #Brewers. Not definite. But closer merry-go-round could leave some without chairs.
